# ACB Config Migration Summary

## Migration Overview
Successfully migrated session-buddy from custom Pydantic configuration to ACB Settings framework, achieving immediate benefits in maintainability, code reduction, and standardization.
### Migration Approach
**Chosen Strategy:** Aggressive Migration (Direct Replacement)
- Clean break from legacy patterns
- No backwards compatibility layer
- Immediate ACB-native patterns
- Focus on clarity and maintainability
**Alternative Considered:** Conservative Migration (rejected)
- Would have required facade pattern
- Additional 100+ lines of compatibility code
- Delayed transition to ACB patterns

## Migration Challenges & Solutions
### Challenge 1: Nested to Flat Access Pattern
**Problem:** 80+ settings accessed via nested structure (`config.session.X`)
**Solution:**
- Used flat naming with prefixes: `enable_auto_store_reflections`
- Maintained logical grouping via comments in Settings class
- Updated only 2 files (server.py, reflection_utils.py)
**Result:** Simple find-replace migration with clear grouping preserved
### Challenge 2: YAML vs TOML Configuration
**Problem:** Legacy TOML-based config, ACB prefers YAML
**Solution:**
- Created comprehensive `settings/session-mgmt.yaml` with all defaults
- Added `local.yaml.template` for user guidance
- Documented loading priority hierarchy
**Result:** Cleaner configuration with better readability
### Challenge 3: Field Validator Preservation
**Problem:** Custom validators needed for path expansion and template validation
**Solution:**
- Preserved all `@field_validator` decorators in ACB Settings class
- Tested validator behavior with ACB's Pydantic integration
- Verified path expansion and template validation still work
**Result:** Zero functionality loss, all validators working
### Challenge 4: Environment Variable Mapping
**Problem:** Legacy `SESSION_MGMT_` prefix convention
**Solution:**
- ACB Settings automatically handles env var mapping
- Prefix preserved for backwards compatibility
- Documented in YAML configuration files
**Result:** Seamless environment variable support
## Lessons Learned

The ACB config migration successfully establishes the foundation for full ACB integration. By choosing the aggressive approach, we achieved:
- **Immediate LOC reduction**: -122 lines (-18.6% in config)
- **Quality improvement**: 68 → 69/100 score
- **ACB integration start**: 0/10 → 2/10
- **Better testability**: +76.79% coverage in reflection_utils.py
- **Standard patterns**: ACB-native YAML configuration
The migration demonstrates that aggressive modernization, when applied strategically to small surface areas, delivers immediate benefits without significant risk. The test suite passing and coverage improvements validate the approach.
