## Test Infrastructure
### Fixtures
#### `temp_workspace`
- Creates temporary directory for test isolation
- Automatically cleaned up after test
#### `mock_claude_binary`
- Creates mock Claude Code binary executable
- Returns version string when executed
- Cross-platform (Windows/Unix)
#### `test_config`
- Provides test-friendly configuration
- Disables long-running operations (update checks)
- Sets reasonable timeouts
- Configures all managers
#### `mock_binary_info`
- Mock BinaryInfo object
- Version "1.0.0"
- Valid binary state
### Mocking Strategy
**Mock Layers:**
1. **Configuration Loading:** Mock `load_config()` to avoid file I/O
2. **Notifications:** Mock `setup_notifications()` to avoid external services
3. **Binary Discovery:** Mock binary discovery to avoid system scanning
4. **Manager Initialization:** Mock manager `initialize()` to avoid database operations
5. **Process Execution:** Mock subprocess execution to avoid real Claude Code binary
### Isolation
- **No Real Services:** All external dependencies are mocked
- **Temporary Storage:** Uses temp directories, cleaned up automatically
- **No Network:** No actual HTTP/network calls
- **Fast Execution:** Mocks ensure tests run in milliseconds

## Maintenance
### Adding New Tests
1. Follow the naming convention: `test_XX_descriptive_name`
2. Add comprehensive docstring explaining what's tested
3. Use existing fixtures for consistency
4. Mock external dependencies
5. Add assertions for all critical behaviors
6. Update this summary document
### Common Patterns
**Async Test:**
```python
@pytest.mark.asyncio
async def test_something(test_config):
# Test implementation
pass
```
**Mocking Managers:**
```python
with patch('shannon_mcp.server.BinaryManager') as MockBinaryManager:
mock_mgr = AsyncMock()
mock_mgr.initialize = AsyncMock()
MockBinaryManager.return_value = mock_mgr
```
**Cleanup:**
```python
# Always cleanup at end
await server.shutdown()
```
---
## Known Limitations
1. **No Real Binary Testing:** Tests use mocked binary, not real Claude Code
2. **No Network Testing:** All network operations are mocked
3. **No Database Persistence:** Uses in-memory or temp databases
4. **Simplified Streaming:** JSONL streaming is mocked, not fully tested
5. **No Performance Load:** Concurrent tests use small numbers
These limitations are intentional for test speed and isolation. Real integration testing with actual binaries should be done separately.
---
## Future Enhancements
1. **Real Binary Tests:** Add optional tests with real Claude Code binary
2. **Load Testing:** Add stress tests with many concurrent sessions
3. **Network Mocking:** Add tests with mock HTTP responses
4. **Streaming Tests:** Add full JSONL stream parsing tests
5. **Checkpoint Persistence:** Test checkpoint save/restore fully
6. **Hook Testing:** Add comprehensive hook execution tests
7. **Analytics Testing:** Test analytics data collection and storage
---
## Troubleshooting
### Test Failures
**Import Errors:**
- Ensure `pythonpath` includes `src` directory
- Check `pyproject.toml` configuration
**AsyncIO Errors:**
- Verify `pytest-asyncio` is installed
- Check `@pytest.mark.asyncio` decorators
**Mock Errors:**
- Verify all managers are properly mocked
- Check patch paths match actual import paths
**Timeout Errors:**
- Increase test timeout in config
- Check for actual blocking operations (should all be mocked)
### Debug Mode
Run with debug output:
```bash
poetry run pytest tests/test_e2e_integration.py -v -s --log-cli-level=DEBUG
```
---
## Success Criteria
A successful test run indicates:
1. **Server Architecture:** Core server components work together
2. **MCP Protocol:** Protocol handlers are properly implemented
3. **Manager Integration:** All managers initialize and interact correctly
4. **Binary System:** Binary discovery and management works
5. **Session Management:** Session lifecycle is properly managed
6. **Agent System:** Agent registration and task assignment works
7. **Error Handling:** System handles errors gracefully
8. **Resource Access:** MCP resources are accessible
9. **Advanced Features:** Checkpoints and other features work
10. **Performance:** System initializes and operates efficiently
