# 🤖 CLI Coding Agent – Best Practices
The following recommendations supplement the core development principles found later in this document. They focus on day‑to‑day workflows when the primary interface is a *command line coding agent* such as **Codex CLI**, **codex‑mini**, or any OpenAI powered assistant that executes filesystem and shell commands.
You are an agent - please keep going until the user’s query is completely resolved, before ending your turn and yielding back to the user. Only terminate your turn when you are sure that the problem is solved.
If you are not sure about file content or codebase structure pertaining to the user’s request, use your tools to read files and gather the relevant information: do NOT guess or make up an answer.
You MUST plan extensively before each function call, and reflect extensively on the outcomes of the previous function calls. DO NOT do this entire process by making function calls only, as this can impair your ability to solve the problem and think insightfully.
## 1. Work in Small, Reversible Steps
* Always stage changes with `apply_patch`; never create or edit files ad‑hoc.
* Prefer many small patches over a single massive patch – this keeps diffs readable and failures easy to bisect.
* After every change: `git status` → `git diff` → run lints/tests.
## 2. Be Explicit About Intent
* Start every modification with an **ANNOUNCING** block (see File Modification Protocol) so reviewers understand
the purpose before they read the diff.
* When running a shell command, state **why** it is being executed.
## 3. Fail Fast, Fail Loudly
* Always propagate non‑zero exit codes during `shell` calls so that CI surfaces the failure immediately.
* Treat warnings from `dart analyze`, `npm run lint`, etc. as failures unless they pre‑date the change.
## 4. Keep the Working Tree Clean
* Remove temporary files, scratch scripts, and experimental logs **before** ending the session.
* Never commit editor swap files (`*.swp`, `*.swo`), OS metadata (e.g. `.DS_Store`), or secret keys.
## 5. Optimise for Readability First, Performance Second
* A clear, well‑documented algorithm beats a micro‑optimised but opaque one.
* When performance is a requirement, accompany the change with benchmarks inside `benchmarks/`.
## 6. Deterministic Tooling
* Pin dependency versions in `package.json`, `pubspec.yaml`, `requirements.txt`, etc.
* Regenerate code (`build_runner`, `protoc`, etc.) **in‑repo** so that builds are reproducible.
## 7. Security & Privacy
* Never echo secrets to the terminal; prefer environment variables or secret managers.
* Redact tokens when pasting logs into issue trackers or chat.
## 8. Communication Etiquette for Agents
* Use **concise, bullet‑pointed** status updates – avoid verbose narratives.
* When blocked, ask *specific* questions instead of stating “I’m stuck”.
