# Claude Code REST API Implementation Summary
## Overview
Successfully implemented a comprehensive REST API for exposing the Claude Code SDK functionality. The API provides session-based conversations with Claude, real-time streaming responses, and full authentication/authorization support.
## Implemented Components
### 1. Core API Structure (`src/api/claude-code-api.ts`)
- RESTful API router with Express
- Session-based conversation management
- Request ID tracking for all operations
- Comprehensive error handling with standardized format
### 2. Session Management (`src/api/session-manager.ts`)
- In-memory session storage with TTL
- Automatic session cleanup background task
- Session activity tracking and extension
- Maximum concurrent sessions limit
- Session statistics and monitoring
### 3. Authentication & Security (`src/api/auth-middleware.ts`)
- API key authentication middleware
- Rate limiting per API key
- Configurable authentication requirements per endpoint
- Support for multiple API key sources (env vars)
### 4. Endpoints Implemented
#### Session Management
- `POST /api/v1/sessions` - Create new Claude Code session
- `GET /api/v1/sessions` - List active sessions
- `GET /api/v1/sessions/:id` - Get session details
- `DELETE /api/v1/sessions/:id` - End session
#### Messaging
- `POST /api/v1/sessions/:id/messages` - Send message (streaming/non-streaming)
- `GET /api/v1/sessions/:id/stream` - SSE endpoint for real-time streaming
#### Utility
- `GET /api/v1/models` - List available Claude models
- `GET /api/v1/health` - Health check with session statistics
## Key Features
### Real-time Streaming
- Server-Sent Events (SSE) for streaming Claude responses
- Automatic keep-alive for long-running streams
- Graceful handling of client disconnections
- AbortController support for cancellation
### Session Persistence
- Sessions maintain Claude conversation context
- Automatic session ID management
- Resume capability for existing Claude sessions
- Configurable session timeout with automatic cleanup
### Security
- API key validation on protected endpoints
- Rate limiting to prevent abuse
- Request ID tracking for audit trails
- Standardized error responses
### Integration
- Seamlessly integrated into existing HTTP transport
- Configurable via transport options
- Maintains backward compatibility with MCP protocol
- Automatic mounting when enabled
## Configuration
The API can be configured through the HTTP transport:
```javascript
{
claudeCodeApi: {
enabled: true,
sessionTimeout: 3600000, // 1 hour
maxSessions: 100,
auth: {
enabled: true,
apiKeys: ['key1', 'key2'], // or from env vars
requireAuth: ['POST /sessions', 'POST /sessions/:id/messages']
},
rateLimit: {
enabled: true,
windowMs: 3600000, // 1 hour
maxRequests: 100
}
}
}
```
## Usage Examples
### Creating a Session
```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:3050/api/v1/sessions \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "x-api-key: your-api-key" \
-d '{
"model": "claude-3-opus-20240229",
"permissionMode": "default"
}'
```
### Sending a Message
```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:3050/api/v1/sessions/{sessionId}/messages \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "x-api-key: your-api-key" \
-d '{
"prompt": "Hello, Claude!",
"stream": false
}'
```
### Streaming Response
```bash
curl -N -H "Accept: text/event-stream" \
-H "x-api-key: your-api-key" \
"http://localhost:3050/api/v1/sessions/{sessionId}/stream?prompt=Write%20code"
```
## Testing
- Created comprehensive test script: `/tests/scripts/test-claude-api.sh`
- Demonstrates all API endpoints and features
- Includes SSE streaming example
- Shows proper error handling
## Documentation
- API examples for multiple languages: `/docs/claude-code-api-examples.md`
- Implementation plan: `/docs/plans/claude-code-rest-api.md`
- Test scripts for validation
## Next Steps
1. **OpenAPI Specification**: Create formal API documentation
2. **Integration Tests**: Comprehensive test suite for all endpoints
3. **Persistence Layer**: Add Redis/Database support for sessions
4. **WebSocket Support**: Alternative to SSE for bidirectional communication
5. **Metrics & Monitoring**: Prometheus metrics integration
6. **SDK Libraries**: Client libraries for popular languages
