## Introduction
This feature implements a background task queue system for embedding generation to prevent UI blocking during article creation and updates. The system ensures articles are persisted immediately while embedding tasks are processed asynchronously, with proper error handling and retry mechanisms.
## Glossary
- **Embedding System**: The semantic search functionality that generates vector embeddings for articles
- **Background Queue**: An asynchronous task processing system that handles embedding generation without blocking the main application flow
- **Article Persistence**: The immediate saving of article data to the database before embedding processing
- **Embedding Task**: A queued job that generates vector embeddings for a specific article
- **Task Status**: The current state of an embedding task (pending, processing, completed, failed)
## Requirements
### Requirement 1
**User Story:** As a user creating or updating articles, I want the article to be saved immediately without waiting for embedding generation, so that I can continue working without UI delays.
#### Acceptance Criteria
1. WHEN a user creates a new article, THE system SHALL persist the article to the database immediately before queuing the embedding task
2. WHEN a user updates an existing article, THE system SHALL save the changes to the database immediately before queuing the embedding update task
3. WHEN an embedding task is queued, THE system SHALL return success to the user interface without waiting for embedding completion
4. WHEN the article save operation completes, THE system SHALL provide immediate feedback to the user that the article was saved successfully
5. WHEN an embedding task fails, THE system SHALL maintain the article data in the database without affecting the user's ability to access or modify the article
### Requirement 2
**User Story:** As a system administrator, I want a reliable background queue system for embedding tasks, so that embedding generation can be processed efficiently without impacting system performance.
#### Acceptance Criteria
1. WHEN an article requires embedding generation, THE system SHALL add the task to a persistent background queue
2. WHEN the queue processes embedding tasks, THE system SHALL handle one task at a time to prevent resource contention
3. WHEN an embedding task fails, THE system SHALL implement retry logic with exponential backoff up to a maximum of 3 attempts
4. WHEN the system restarts, THE system SHALL resume processing any pending embedding tasks from the persistent queue
5. WHEN embedding tasks are processed, THE system SHALL update the task status to track progress and completion
### Requirement 3
**User Story:** As a user managing articles with semantic search, I want to manually trigger embedding updates for failed or missing embeddings, so that I can ensure all articles have proper search functionality.
#### Acceptance Criteria
1. WHEN a user requests to update embeddings, THE system SHALL identify articles with missing or failed embeddings
2. WHEN the update embeddings command is executed, THE system SHALL queue embedding tasks for all identified articles
3. WHEN processing bulk embedding updates, THE system SHALL provide progress feedback showing the number of articles processed
4. WHEN embedding generation completes successfully, THE system SHALL update the article's embedding status in the database
5. WHEN all embedding tasks in a bulk update complete, THE system SHALL provide a summary of successful and failed operations
### Requirement 4
**User Story:** As a developer integrating with the MCP server, I want embedding generation to be handled transparently in the background, so that article operations through the MCP interface remain fast and reliable.
#### Acceptance Criteria
1. WHEN an MCP client creates an article, THE system SHALL return success immediately after database persistence without waiting for embedding completion
2. WHEN an MCP client updates an article, THE system SHALL return the updated article data immediately while queuing embedding updates in the background
3. WHEN an MCP client searches for articles, THE system SHALL return results based on available embeddings without blocking on pending embedding tasks
4. WHEN embedding tasks complete, THE system SHALL update the search index to include newly generated embeddings
5. WHEN the MCP server queries article status, THE system SHALL include embedding status information in the response
### Requirement 5
**User Story:** As a system operator, I want monitoring and observability for the embedding queue system, so that I can track performance and troubleshoot issues.
#### Acceptance Criteria
1. WHEN embedding tasks are processed, THE system SHALL log task start, completion, and failure events with timestamps
2. WHEN the queue system is queried, THE system SHALL provide statistics on pending, processing, completed, and failed tasks
3. WHEN embedding tasks fail repeatedly, THE system SHALL log detailed error information for debugging purposes
4. WHEN the system processes embedding tasks, THE system SHALL track processing time metrics for performance monitoring
5. WHEN queue operations occur, THE system SHALL maintain audit logs for task creation, status changes, and completion events
