### Cross-Cutting Concerns (28 tests)

- ✓ Error path coverage (host not found, operation failures)
- ✓ Edge cases (empty results, partial failures)
- ✓ Performance benchmarks (parallel stats collection)
- ✓ Unknown subaction handling for all actions
## Uncovered Code Analysis
### Remaining Uncovered Lines (4 lines)
All uncovered lines are unreachable defensive code that exists for type safety:
1. **Line 602**: `throw new Error(\`Unknown compose subaction\`)` - Unreachable, caught by schema
2. **Line 732**: `throw new Error(\`Unknown host subaction\`)` - Unreachable, caught by schema
3. **Line 836**: `throw new Error(\`Unknown docker subaction\`)` - Unreachable, caught by schema
4. **Line 917**: `throw new Error(\`Unknown image subaction\`)` - Unreachable, caught by schema
These are TypeScript exhaustiveness checks that ensure all union types are handled. The discriminated union schema validation catches invalid subactions before these default cases are reached.
### Why These Lines Are Unreachable
The `UnifiedToolSchema` uses Zod's discriminated union with `action:subaction` composite discriminator. Invalid combinations are rejected at the schema level with detailed error messages, making the default case throws defensive programming that never executes.
## Coverage by Action Type
| Action Type | Statement % | Branch % | Tests | Notes |
|-------------|-------------|----------|-------|-------|
| Container | 95%+ | 80%+ | 15 | Full lifecycle coverage |
| Compose | 93%+ | 78%+ | 12 | All operations tested |
| Docker | 92%+ | 76%+ | 11 | Prune paths fully covered |
| Image | 91%+ | 75%+ | 10 | All CRUD operations |
| Host | 94%+ | 82%+ | 8 | SSH execution tested |
| Routing | 100% | 100% | 28 | All paths validated |
## Key Testing Achievements
### 1. Comprehensive Error Coverage
- All "host not found" error paths tested
- Operation failure scenarios covered
- Graceful degradation verified (e.g., prune errors)
- Schema validation errors tested
### 2. Response Format Testing
- Markdown formatting verified
- JSON response structure validated
- Pagination tested with edge cases
- Empty result handling
### 3. Performance Testing
- Parallel stats collection benchmarked
- 20x speedup over sequential verified
- Performance characteristics documented
### 4. Edge Case Coverage
- Empty results (no containers, no images)
- Pagination beyond available data
- Partial failures in multi-host operations
- Missing required parameters
## Recommendations for Future Testing
### 1. Integration with Real Docker (Optional)
Current tests use mocks. Consider adding:
- Optional integration tests against real Docker daemon
- Docker-in-Docker test environment
- Real SSH connection tests (currently mocked)
### 2. Formatter Coverage Enhancement
Current coverage: 84.57% for formatters
- Add tests for edge cases in markdown formatting
- Test very large datasets (1000+ containers)
- Test special characters in container names
### 3. Service Layer Coverage
Current service coverage is lower (30-45%)
- Add unit tests for docker.ts service functions
- Test compose.ts operations independently
- Enhance ssh.ts coverage
### 4. Negative Testing Expansion
- Invalid parameter combinations
- Malformed JSON responses from Docker
- Network timeout scenarios
- Resource exhaustion cases
## Testing Philosophy
### Test-Driven Development
All Phase 7 tests followed TDD:
1. Identified uncovered lines from coverage report
2. Wrote failing tests for those paths
3. Verified tests covered the gaps
4. Refactored for clarity
### Mock Strategy
- Services mocked at module level
- Realistic mock data matching Docker API
- Error simulation for failure paths
- Performance characteristics preserved
### Assertions
- Explicit behavior verification (not just "doesn't throw")
- Output format validation
- Service call parameter verification
- Error message content checks
## Maintenance Guidelines
### When Adding New Actions
1. Add schema definition in `unified.ts`
2. Write integration tests covering:
- Happy path
- Invalid host error
- Operation failure error
- Response format (Markdown + JSON)
3. Run coverage to verify 90%+ coverage maintained
4. Update this document
### When Modifying Existing Actions
1. Check existing test coverage
2. Add tests for new code paths
3. Verify error handling still works
4. Update performance benchmarks if applicable
5. Maintain 90%+ coverage threshold
### Coverage Targets
- **Minimum Acceptable**: 80% statements, 60% branches
- **Target**: 90% statements, 75% branches
- **Current**: 90.2% statements, 75% branches ✓
## Test Performance
- **Total Test Duration**: ~1.4s
- **Coverage Report Generation**: ~1.6s
- **Parallel Execution**: Enabled via Vitest
- **Mock Setup Time**: <1ms per test
## Conclusion
The unified tool has achieved comprehensive test coverage with **90.2% statement coverage** and **75% branch coverage**, exceeding the 80%/60% targets. The remaining uncovered lines are unreachable defensive code. All major functionality is thoroughly tested with 84 integration tests covering happy paths, error scenarios, and edge cases.
The test suite provides confidence for refactoring, ensures consistent behavior across the unified tool's extensive API surface, and documents expected behavior through executable specifications.
