# Pre-Commit Testing Setup
**Date:** 2025-10-06
**Status:** ✅ Complete
---
## Overview
Set up automated pre-commit testing to prevent CI failures by running build, lint, and tests locally before each commit.
## What Was Implemented
### 1. Husky Git Hooks
- **Installed:** `husky@^9.1.7`
- **Initialized:** `.husky/` directory with pre-commit hook
- **Purpose:** Automatically run quality checks before commits
### 2. Pre-Commit Script
**Script:** `npm run precommit`
**Runs in sequence:**
1. **Build:** `npm run build:local` - Compiles TypeScript to ensure no build errors
2. **Lint:** `npm run lint` - ESLint checks (warnings allowed, errors block commit)
3. **Test:** `npm run test` - All 38 tests must pass
### 3. ESLint Configuration Updates
Updated `eslint.config.mjs` to ignore:
- `.smithery/**` - Generated Smithery files
- `examples/**` - Example code with console statements
- `dist/**`, `node_modules/**`, `coverage/**` - Build artifacts
**Result:** 0 errors, 91 warnings (all acceptable)
### 4. Pre-Commit Hook
**File:** `.husky/pre-commit`
```bash
#!/usr/bin/env sh
. "$(dirname -- "$0")/_/husky.sh"
# Run build, lint, and tests before commit
npm run precommit
```
---
## Verification
### Test Results (2025-10-06)
```
✓ Build: Success (12ms)
✓ Lint: 0 errors, 91 warnings
✓ Tests: 37 passed, 1 skipped (38 total)
- tests/tools/constitution.test.ts: 5 tests ✓
- tests/simple-conformance.test.ts: 8 tests ✓
- tests/server.test.ts: 4 tests ✓
- tests/conformance.test.ts: 21 tests ✓ (1 skipped)
```
### What Gets Checked
1. **TypeScript Compilation:** Catches type errors before commit
2. **Code Quality:** ESLint enforces standards
3. **Functionality:** All tests must pass
4. **No Breaking Changes:** Prevents committing broken code
---
## Usage
### Normal Workflow
```bash
git add .
git commit -m "Your message"
# Pre-commit hook runs automatically
# If any check fails, commit is blocked
```
### Manually Run Checks
```bash
# Run all pre-commit checks
npm run precommit
# Or run individually
npm run build:local
npm run lint
npm run test
```
### Skip Pre-Commit Hook (Not Recommended)
```bash
# Only for emergencies
git commit --no-verify -m "Your message"
```
---
## Benefits
### 1. Prevents CI Failures
- Catches errors **before** they reach CI
- Saves time by failing fast locally
- No more "fix linting" commits
### 2. Maintains Code Quality
- Enforces TypeScript compilation
- Consistent code style via ESLint
- All tests pass before commit
### 3. Developer Confidence
- Know your code builds before pushing
- Tests verified locally
- CI becomes confirmation, not discovery
---
## Troubleshooting
### Hook Not Running
```bash
# Reinstall Husky
npm run prepare
chmod +x .husky/pre-commit
```
### Build Fails
```bash
# Check TypeScript errors
npm run build:local
# Fix errors in src/
```
### Tests Fail
```bash
# Run tests with watch mode
npm run test:watch
# Fix failing tests
```
### Lint Errors
```bash
# Auto-fix where possible
npx eslint . --fix
# Manually fix remaining errors
```
---
## Future Enhancements
### Potential Additions
- [ ] Prettier formatting check
- [ ] Commit message linting (conventional commits)
- [ ] Type coverage checking
- [ ] Bundle size validation
### Performance Optimizations
- [ ] Cache build artifacts
- [ ] Run only affected tests (if >100 tests)
- [ ] Parallel execution of independent checks
---
## Configuration Files
### package.json
```json
{
"scripts": {
"precommit": "npm run build:local && npm run lint && npm run test",
"prepare": "husky"
},
"devDependencies": {
"husky": "^9.1.7"
}
}
```
### eslint.config.mjs
```javascript
export default [
{
ignores: [
'dist/**',
'node_modules/**',
'coverage/**',
'*.config.js',
'*.config.mjs',
'.smithery/**',
'examples/**'
]
},
// ... rest of config
];
```
---
## Impact on Workflow
### Before Pre-Commit Hooks
```
Code → Commit → Push → CI Fails → Fix → Commit → Push → CI Passes
Time: ~10-15 minutes per failed CI run
```
### After Pre-Commit Hooks
```
Code → Commit (blocked if broken) → Fix → Commit → Push → CI Passes
Time: ~1-2 minutes (immediate feedback)
```
### Time Savings
- **Per Commit:** 8-13 minutes saved on CI failures
- **Per Day:** ~30-60 minutes (assuming 3-5 commits/day)
- **Per Sprint:** ~5-10 hours team-wide

**Status:** ✅ Fully Operational
**Next:** Ready for Phase 1 implementation with confidence
