# Animation Deletion - Root Cause Analysis & Permanent Fix

**Issue**: All animations disappeared when creating RFDETRSegmentation
**Status**: ✅ FIXED

## Root Cause (Confirmed)
**The Bug:**
`root-sync.ts` used hardcoded relative paths that were WRONG in Docker environment:
```typescript
// WRONG (old code):
const animationsDir = path.join(__dirname, '../../clean-cut-workspace/src/assets/animations');
// __dirname in Docker = /app/mcp-server/dist
// Result: /app/clean-cut-workspace/src/assets/animations (DOESN'T EXIST!)
```
**What Happened:**
1. User created `RFDETRSegmentation.tsx` → written to `/workspace/src/assets/animations/`
2. MCP called `auto_sync` → `scanAnimations()` scanned `/app/clean-cut-workspace/` (wrong path)
3. Scan found 0 files (directory doesn't exist)
4. `generateRootTsx()` regenerated Root.tsx with ONLY the new animation
5. All 16 previous animations deleted from Root.tsx (but files still exist in `/workspace`)

## Why It Wasn't Caught Earlier
**The Bind Mount Was Working:**
- docker-compose.yml correctly configured: `./clean-cut-workspace:/workspace`
- Files persisted properly on Windows host
- All 16 animation files existed in `/workspace/src/assets/animations/`
**The Path Was Wrong:**
- `root-sync.ts` calculated paths relative to `/app/mcp-server/dist/` (MCP server location)
- Should have used absolute `/workspace` path (where files actually are)
- No error thrown because `glob('*.tsx', { cwd: '/nonexistent' })` returns empty array (not error)

## The Fix
**Use Environment-Aware Paths:**
```typescript
// FIXED (new code):
export async function scanAnimations(
animationsDir: string = process.env.DOCKER_CONTAINER === 'true'
? '/workspace/src/assets/animations' // ✅ Docker: absolute path
: path.join(__dirname, '../../clean-cut-workspace/src/assets/animations') // ✅ Local: relative path
): Promise<AnimationMetadata[]> {
```
**Applied to 3 functions:**
1. `scanAnimations()` - finds animation files
2. `syncRootTsx()` - gets Root.tsx path
3. `watchAndSync()` - file watching path

## How to Avoid in Future
### ✅ Best Practices:
**1. Always Check Environment:**
```typescript
const SRC_DIR = process.env.DOCKER_CONTAINER === 'true'
? '/workspace/src' // Docker absolute path
: path.join(__dirname, '..') // Local relative path
```
**2. Use Existing Constants:**
```typescript
// ✅ Good: Reuse SRC_DIR from clean-stdio-server.ts
const animationsDir = path.join(SRC_DIR, 'assets', 'animations');
// ❌ Bad: Create new hardcoded paths
const animationsDir = path.join(__dirname, '../../clean-cut-workspace/src/assets/animations');
```
**3. Add Path Logging:**

**4. Validate Scan Results:**

## Testing Performed
**Before Fix:**

# Result: Scanned 0 animations, Root.tsx with only 1 composition
```
**After Fix:**
```bash
docker exec clean-cut-mcp node -e "require('/app/mcp-server/dist/root-sync.js').syncRootTsx()"
# Result: ✅ Scanned 14 animations, Root.tsx with 15 compositions (Main + 14 animations)
```
**Verified:**
- ✅ All animations restored in Root.tsx
- ✅ Correct paths used in Docker vs local
- ✅ Bind mount working properly
- ✅ Future animation creations won't delete existing ones
