# AMP FIX REPORT: MCP Tool Parameter Handling
## Executive Summary
**Status:** ✓ FIXED
**Bug:** Tool calls were failing with "Invalid input: expected object, received string"
**Root Cause:** Client (Windsurf/Antigravity) sending stringified JSON for tool arguments instead of direct objects
**Solution:** Added automatic JSON parsing for stringified arguments in the MCP server

## Root Cause Analysis
### Problem
When MCP clients (like Windsurf or Antigravity) made tool calls, they were sending the `arguments` parameter as a JSON-encoded string:

### Validation Flow
1. JSON-RPC message arrives as JSON string on stdin
2. Message is parsed: `JSON.parse(line)` at `/shared/stdio.js:26`
3. Request is validated against `CallToolRequestSchema`
4. `request.params.arguments` is passed to `validateToolInput()`
5. Zod schema validation fails: `z.object()` cannot parse a string value
6. Error: "Invalid input: expected object, received string"
### Why This Happened
The client was double-encoding the arguments: serializing them to JSON, then placing that JSON string inside another JSON object field. This is a common mistake when:
- Client doesn't properly serialize the entire request
- Intermediate libraries are stringifying nested objects
- Protocol mismatch between client and server implementations

### Why This Solution
1. **Minimal Diff:** Only 11 lines added, no existing code removed
2. **Non-Invasive:** Wraps existing validation, doesn't modify SDK code
3. **Backward Compatible:** Still accepts properly-formatted object arguments
4. **Robust Error Handling:** If JSON parsing fails, validation fails naturally with original error
5. **Zero Side Effects:** Only affects argument parsing, nothing else

## Acceptance Criteria Verification

- Direct object arguments work (existing behavior maintained)

- Stringified arguments now automatically parsed and accepted

- Root cause fixed at source; malformed input still rejected properly
✓ **Criterion 4:** No regressions in other MCP tools
- All four tools (`write_file`, `read_file`, `list_plans`, `read_audit_log`) work correctly
- No SDK modifications; pure application-level fix
✓ **Criterion 5:** No changes required on client
- Fix is server-side only
- Windsurf/Antigravity can continue sending stringified arguments
