- Default value `0` only applies to missing keys, not None values

- Track `_initial_sync_task` reference and cancel/await during `close()` for proper cleanup
- Change `.get('total_memories', 0)` to `.get('total_memories') or 0` to handle both missing keys AND None values
- **Impact**: Eliminates spurious CI test failures on Linux, improves hybrid backend robustness
