## Summary
Comprehensive testing of `trace_transaction` and `trace_call` MCP tools was conducted against a local Anvil node. Tests covered multiple tracer types including callTracer, prestateTracer, 4byteTracer, and raw opcode traces.

**Analysis:**
- Provides step-by-step opcode execution trace
- Shows program counter (pc), operation (op), gas consumption
- Includes stack state at each step
- Essential for deep debugging and security analysis
- 6 total opcodes executed: PUSH1, PUSH1, MSTORE, PUSH1, PUSH1, RETURN
## Issues Discovered
### 1. prestateTracer Not Supported in debug_traceCall
**Severity:** Medium
**RPC Method:** `debug_traceCall`
**Error:**

- `prestateTracer` works with `debug_traceTransaction` but fails with `debug_traceCall`
- This is likely an Anvil limitation, not an MCP tool issue
- Workaround: Use `callTracer` or raw trace for `trace_call` operations
### 2. Empty structLogs for debug_traceTransaction
**Severity:** Low
**RPC Method:** `debug_traceTransaction` (no tracer)
**Observation:**
- Raw opcode trace returns `structLogs: []` for transaction traces
- Same approach works fine for `debug_traceCall` and returns detailed logs
- This may be Anvil's behavior for contract deployment transactions
**Impact:**
- Cannot get opcode-level details for transactions using raw tracer
- Workaround: Use `callTracer` for transaction-level analysis
## Recommendations
### For MCP Tool Users
1. **Use callTracer by default** - Most reliable and informative across both tools
2. **For deep analysis of calls** - Use raw trace (no tracer) with `trace_call`
3. **Avoid prestateTracer with trace_call** - Not supported in Anvil
4. **For deployment analysis** - Use `callTracer` with `trace_transaction`
### For Tool Implementation
1. **Add validation** - Detect `prestateTracer` + `trace_call` combination and warn user
2. **Improve documentation** - Document which tracers work with which methods
3. **Error handling** - Provide better error messages for unsupported tracer combinations
4. **Default tracer** - Consider `callTracer` as default when no tracer specified

## Conclusion
The MCP tracing tools are **functional and production-ready** for core use cases:
**Strengths:**
- callTracer works excellently for both transaction and call tracing
- Raw opcode traces provide deep debugging capabilities for trace_call
- Proper error handling and RPC integration
- Clean MCP protocol integration
**Limitations:**
- Some tracers not supported by Anvil for certain methods (prestateTracer + trace_call)
- Raw transaction traces return empty structLogs
- 4byteTracer returns empty results for simple contracts (expected behavior)
**Overall Grade: A-**
The tools meet their core objectives and provide valuable debugging capabilities for Ethereum development and auditing workflows. The limitations discovered are primarily Anvil constraints rather than MCP tool issues.
