## R1: Hostaway Messages API Discovery
### Decision: Use Hostaway Conversations API
**Question**: Does Hostaway API provide message retrieval endpoints for all channels (email, SMS, in-app, platform messaging)?
**Research Findings**:
Based on Hostaway API documentation analysis and v1.0 integration patterns:
1. **Available Endpoints**:
- `GET /v1/conversations` - List conversations for a booking/listing
- `GET /v1/conversations/{id}` - Get specific conversation details
- `GET /v1/conversations/{id}/messages` - Get messages for a conversation
- Endpoints follow same OAuth 2.0 authentication pattern as v1.0 listings/bookings
2. **Channel Support Matrix**:
- ✅ **Email**: Fully supported via Hostaway's email integration
- ✅ **Platform Messaging**: Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO messages
- ⚠️ **SMS**: Supported if property manager has SMS integration configured
- ⚠️ **In-App**: Hostaway's internal messaging system
3. **Pagination**:
- Mechanism: `limit`/`offset` (same as v1.0 listings endpoint)
- Default limit: 50

**Rationale**: Hostaway provides comprehensive message retrieval via Conversations API. Multi-channel support confirmed. Pagination follows v1.0 patterns, enabling code reuse.
**Alternatives Considered**:
- **Separate channel APIs**: Rejected - Hostaway consolidates all channels under Conversations API
- **Webhook-based retrieval**: Rejected - Real-time notifications out of scope for v1.1 (deferred to v1.2)
- **GraphQL**: Rejected - Hostaway uses REST API, consistent with v1.0
**Implementation Notes**:
- Reuse v1.0 `HostawayClient` with new methods: `get_conversations()`, `get_conversation_messages()`
- Map Hostaway `channelType` to our `MessageChannel` enum
- Map Hostaway `direction` to our `SenderType` (in → guest, out → system/property_manager)
- Handle `reservationId` → `booking_id` mapping (already established in v1.0)

## R2: Multi-Channel Consolidation Patterns
### Decision: Chronological Merge with Channel Labeling
**Question**: How to merge messages from multiple channels into chronological timeline?
**Research Findings**:
1. **Timestamp Handling**:
- Hostaway provides `createdAt` in ISO 8601 format (UTC)
- All messages have timestamps (required field per API schema)
- Edge case: If timestamp missing → use retrieval order as fallback
2. **Consolidation Algorithm**:

- **Slack**: Channel-specific timelines, no cross-channel consolidation
- **Intercom**: Unified inbox with channel labels (email, chat, SMS)
- **Zendesk**: Ticket-based consolidation across all channels
- **Chosen approach**: Similar to Intercom - unified timeline with channel labels
**Rationale**: Chronological sort with channel labels provides property managers with complete context in order of occurrence. Stable sort ensures deterministic ordering.
**Alternatives Considered**:
- **Channel-segregated timelines**: Rejected - requires multiple API calls, poor UX for context-aware support
- **Content-based deduplication**: Rejected - Hostaway IDs are unique, unnecessary complexity
- **Local timezone conversion**: Rejected - UTC standard prevents timezone confusion, aligns with v1.0
**Implementation Notes**:
- `ConversationThread.messages` list sorted by `timestamp` (Python `sorted(messages, key=lambda m: m.timestamp)`)
- Edge case handler: `if m.timestamp is None: m.timestamp = retrieval_time`
- `channels_used` set derived from `{m.channel for m in messages}`
- Performance: O(n log n) sort for n messages, acceptable for typical conversation sizes (<1000 messages)

### Decision: Structured PartialFailureResponse with Typed Errors
**Question**: What's the optimal structure for PartialFailureResponse to support batch operations?
**Research Findings**:
1. **v1.0 Error Handling Analysis**:
- Current pattern: FastAPI `HTTPException` with status codes
- No batch operation support (all-or-nothing)

- **GraphQL-style errors array**: Rejected - doesn't align with REST/FastAPI patterns
- **Status code in each item**: Rejected - redundant with error_type enum, verbose

- Generic `PartialFailureResponse[T]` allows reuse: `PartialFailureResponse[List[Property]]`, `PartialFailureResponse[List[Booking]]`
- Integration with v1.0: Wrap existing route responses in PartialFailureResponse

- **Mutation testing**: Rejected - too time-consuming for v1.1 timeline
- **100% coverage**: Rejected - unrealistic, focus on critical paths

- `tests/integration/test_error_paths.py` - API error scenarios
