# Architecture Specification This document defines the architecture for Quickbase MCP Server v2. ## System Components ``` ┌─────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ MCP Server Interface │ │ │ │ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ │ │ │ Tools │ │ Tool │ │ │ │ Registry │◄─────►│ Handler │ │ │ └─────────────┘ └──────┬──────┘ │ └─────────────────────────────┬─┘ │ │ │ ┌─────────────────────────────▼───────────┐ │ QuickBase Client Layer │ │ │ │ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ │ │ │ Request │ │ Response │ │ │ │ Builder │ │ Parser │ │ │ └──────┬──────┘ └──────▲──────┘ │ │ │ │ │ │ ┌──────▼──────┐ ┌──────┴──────┐ │ │ │ HTTP │ │ Data │ │ │ │ Client │ │ Mapper │ │ │ └──────┬──────┘ └──────▲──────┘ │ └─────────┬──────────────────────┘ │ │ │ ┌─────────▼────────────────────────────────┐ │ Service Modules │ │ │ │ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ │ │ │ Cache │ │ Error │ │ │ │ Service │ │ Handler │ │ │ └─────────────┘ └─────────────┘ │ │ │ │ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ │ │ │ Logger │ │ Retry │ │ │ │ │ │ Logic │ │ │ └─────────────┘ └─────────────┘ │ └──────────────────────────────────────────┘ ``` ## Component Details ### MCP Server Interface - **Tools Registry**: Maintains a catalog of all available MCP tools - **Tool Handler**: Processes incoming tool requests and returns responses ### QuickBase Client Layer - **Request Builder**: Constructs API requests with parameters - **HTTP Client**: Handles network communication with Quickbase API - **Response Parser**: Processes API responses - **Data Mapper**: Maps between API data formats and TypeScript types ### Service Modules - **Cache Service**: Provides caching functionality for API responses - **Error Handler**: Processes and formats error responses - **Logger**: Handles logging with PII redaction - **Retry Logic**: Manages retries for failed requests ## Data Flow 1. **Incoming Request**: - MCP request received by server - Tool handler identifies the requested tool - Parameters are validated 2. **Client Processing**: - Request builder constructs API request - HTTP client sends request to Quickbase API - Response is received and parsed - Data is mapped to TypeScript types 3. **Response Handling**: - Response formatted according to MCP protocol - Returned to the caller ## Error Handling Errors are processed through several layers: 1. **API Error Detection**: HTTP client detects API errors 2. **Error Classification**: Errors categorized by type 3. **Retry Logic**: Transient errors trigger retry mechanism 4. **Error Response**: Formatted error returned via MCP ## Authentication Flow 1. User credentials stored in environment variables 2. Auth token generated and cached 3. Token included in all API requests 4. Token refresh handled automatically ## Type System - Interface-based design for all major components - Strong typing for all API operations - Shared type definitions for request/response objects ## Security Considerations - No credentials stored in code - PII redacted in logs - Token handling follows best practices - Input validation for all parameters
