# MCP Parameter Validation Issue: Reserved Keyword `id`

## Problem Summary
The `fetch_content` tool in our Scientific Papers MCP server was failing with contradictory parameter validation errors when called from external AI tools, despite working perfectly in local testing. The errors were:
- `"Parameter 'id' must be of type string,number, got number"` (when passed as number)
- `"Parameter 'id' must be of type string,number, got string"` (when passed as string)
Both error messages were logically inconsistent since the schema expected `string,number` but rejected both types.
## Root Cause Analysis
### Initial Hypothesis (Incorrect)
Initially suspected the issue was related to:
- Zod union type validation (`z.union([z.string(), z.number()])`)
- Schema definition problems
- Type conversion issues in our server code
### Actual Root Cause (Discovered)
**The parameter name `id` is a reserved keyword in MCP/JSON-RPC systems.**
The MCP framework treats `id` specially because:
1. **JSON-RPC Protocol Conflict**: JSON-RPC messages have their own `id` field for request identification
2. **Internal MCP Naming**: The MCP framework reserves `id` for internal use
3. **Parameter Parsing Issues**: The validation system gets confused when user parameters have the same name as protocol-level fields
## Investigation Process
### Phase 1: Schema Analysis
- Compared working parameters (`category`, `source`, `count`) with failing parameter (`id`)
- All used identical `z.string()` type definitions
- Confirmed the issue was NOT about parameter types
### Phase 2: Type System Investigation
- Attempted various schema modifications:
- Simplified from `z.union([z.string(), z.number()])` to `z.string()`
- Added explicit type descriptions
- Tried different parameter validation approaches
### Phase 3: Parameter Name Testing
- **Breakthrough**: Changed parameter name from `id` to `paper_identifier`
- Local testing immediately succeeded with the new parameter name
- Confirmed the issue was the parameter name itself, not the type or schema
### Phase 4: Consistency Testing
- Changed to `paper_id` for better user experience
- Verified fix works in local testing
- Published version 0.1.25 with the corrected parameter name
