## Detailed Issue Analysis
### 1. Import Organization Issues (E402) - 34 instances
**Problem**: Module-level imports not at the top of the file
**Impact**: Violates PEP8, makes dependencies harder to track
**Example**:

**Recommendation**: Move all imports to the top of the file in the following order:
1. Standard library imports
2. Third-party imports
3. Local application imports
### 2. Extremely High Complexity Functions
**Problem**: Functions with cyclomatic complexity > 50
**Impact**: Hard to maintain, test, and understand
**Most Complex Functions**:
- `search_code()` (CC: 63) - Handles code search with progressive context, hybrid search, dependencies
- `search()` (CC: 60) - General search across all content types
- `search_docs()` (CC: 53) - Documentation search with similar complexity
- `search_config()` (CC: 53) - Configuration file search
- `index_directory()` (CC: 50) - Recursive directory indexing
**Recommendation**: Break down into smaller functions:

### 3. Duplicate Function Definition (F811)
**Problem**: `get_github_instances()` defined twice (lines 70 and 5081)
**Status**: ✅ FIXED - Renamed local function to `_create_github_instances()`
**Solution Applied**:
- Renamed function at line 5081 to `_create_github_instances()`
- Updated `validate_github_prerequisites()` to use new name
- Preserved decorator pattern usage
### 4. Bare Except Clauses (E722) - 4 instances
**Problem**: Using bare `except:` without specifying exception type
**Impact**: Can catch system exits and keyboard interrupts
**Locations**:
- Line 4433: File hash calculation fallback
- Line 5810: GitHub user retrieval
- Line 7301: Memory status collection
**Recommendation**:

except:
pass
# Use:
except Exception as e:
logger.debug(f"Non-critical error: {e}")
pass
# Or be more specific:
except (IOError, OSError) as e:

```
### 5. Unused Imports and Variables
**Unused Imports** (F401):
- `gc` (line 14)
- `get_error_logger` (line 52)
- `log_operation` (line 52)
- `get_file_info` (line 58)
**Unused Variables** (F841):
- `logger` in multiple functions (lines 4047, 4859)
**Recommendation**: Remove unused imports and variables, or use them if intended.
### 6. F-strings Without Placeholders (F541)
**Problem**: Using f-string prefix without any interpolation
**Locations**: Lines 4131, 4335, 7228, 7231, 7232, 7236
**Example Fix**:

# Use:
console_logger.info("Progressive config search completed")
```
## Recommended Action Plan
### Phase 1: Quick Fixes (1-2 hours)
1. ✅ Fix duplicate function definition (COMPLETED)
2. Remove unused imports and variables
3. Fix f-strings without placeholders
4. Replace bare except clauses with specific exceptions
### Phase 2: Import Reorganization (2-4 hours)
1. Move all imports to the top of the file
2. Group imports by category (stdlib, third-party, local)
3. Sort imports within each group
4. Update any circular import issues
### Phase 3: Complexity Reduction (1-2 weeks)
1. Break down high-complexity search functions
2. Extract common patterns into utility functions
3. Create separate handlers for progressive vs standard modes
4. Implement strategy pattern for different search types
### Phase 4: File Modularization (2-4 weeks)
1. Split 7500+ line file into logical modules:
- `search_operations.py` - All search-related functions
- `indexing_operations.py` - Indexing and file processing
- `github_operations.py` - GitHub integration functions
- `system_operations.py` - Health checks, memory management
