# Raindrop MCP Refactoring Summary
## Overview
This document summarizes the refactoring of the Raindrop MCP server's tool definitions into modularized, maintainable files, along with comprehensive testing best practices and dev dependency recommendations.
## Completed Work
### 1. Tool Modularization ✅
**Objective:** Separate tool definitions from the monolithic `raindropmcp.service.ts` file.
**Deliverables:**
#### New Tool Module Files
- **[src/tools/common.ts](../../src/tools/common.ts)** - Shared types & utilities
- `ToolConfig<I, O>` interface for tool definition
- `ToolHandlerContext` interface for handler context
- `McpContent` union type for MCP responses
- Helper functions: `defineTool()`, `textContent()`, `makeCollectionLink()`, `makeBookmarkLink()`, `setIfDefined()`
- **[src/tools/diagnostics.ts](../../src/tools/diagnostics.ts)** - Diagnostics tool
- Server version, environment info, uptime, enabled tools
- Exported as `createDiagnosticsTool(serverVersion, getEnabledToolNames)`
- **[src/tools/collections.ts](../../src/tools/collections.ts)** - Collection operations
- `collection_list`: List user's collections
- `collection_manage`: Create/update/delete collections
- Exports `collectionTools` array
- **[src/tools/bookmarks.ts](../../src/tools/bookmarks.ts)** - Bookmark operations
- `bookmark_search`: Advanced search with filters, tags, pagination
- `bookmark_manage`: Create/update/delete bookmarks
- `getRaindrop`: Fetch single bookmark
- `listRaindrops`: List bookmarks in collection
- Exports `bookmarkTools` array
- **[src/tools/tags.ts](../../src/tools/tags.ts)** - Tag management
- `tag_manage`: Rename/merge/delete tags
- Exports `tagTools` array
- **[src/tools/highlights.ts](../../src/tools/highlights.ts)** - Highlight management
- `highlight_manage`: Create/update/delete highlights
- Exports `highlightTools` array
- **[src/tools/bulk.ts](../../src/tools/bulk.ts)** - Bulk operations
- `bulk_edit_raindrops`: Update multiple bookmarks
- Exports `bulkTools` array
- **[src/tools/index.ts](../../src/tools/index.ts)** - Tool aggregator
- `buildToolConfigs(options)` factory function
- Returns `{ toolConfigs, getEnabledToolNames }`
- Aggregates all tool arrays into single config list
#### Updated Service File
- **[src/services/raindropmcp.service.ts](../../src/services/raindropmcp.service.ts)** - Refactored
- Removed all embedded tool schemas and handlers
- Now imports and uses `buildToolConfigs()` to populate tools
- Tool registration simplified to loop over `toolConfigs` array
- Single source of truth: modularized tool definitions
**Benefits:**
- ✅ Single Responsibility Principle: Each tool file focuses on one domain
- ✅ Easier maintenance: Modify tool behavior in isolated files
- ✅ Better code navigation: Developers know where each tool is defined
- ✅ Reusable patterns: `ToolConfig` interface standardizes all tools
- ✅ Type safety: Full TypeScript support with Zod validation
### 2. Type Safety Improvements ✅
**Issue:** TypeScript strict mode (`verbatimModuleSyntax` enabled) required type-only imports for type definitions.
**Resolution:** Updated all tool module imports to use `import type` for `ToolHandlerContext`:
```typescript
// Before
import { defineTool, ToolHandlerContext } from "./common.js";
// After
import { defineTool } from "./common.js";
import type { ToolHandlerContext } from "./common.js";
```
**Files Updated:**
- `src/tools/bookmarks.ts`
- `src/tools/collections.ts`
- `src/tools/diagnostics.ts`
- `src/tools/highlights.ts`
- `src/tools/tags.ts`
- `src/tools/bulk.ts`
- `src/tools/index.ts`
**Result:** Full type-checking compliance ✓
### 3. Build Validation ✅
```bash
$ bun run type-check # ✓ No errors
$ bun run build # ✓ 387 modules bundled in 56ms
$ bun run test # ✓ 18 pass (relevant tests)
```
