# Non-Blocking Database Initialization Tests
This directory contains comprehensive tests verifying the FastMCP server's non-blocking database initialization pattern.
## Overview
The Codebase MCP Server implements a **non-blocking startup pattern** where:
1. Tools become available immediately (<100ms)
2. Database initialization runs in the background
3. First tool call waits for DB init if needed (transparent to user)
This pattern follows **FastAPI best practices** and ensures optimal user experience with instant tool availability.
## Test Files
### 1. `test_nonblocking_startup.py` (Unit Test)
**Purpose**: Verifies the non-blocking mechanism without starting the server.
**What it tests**:
- ✅ Tools are registered and available immediately (<100ms)
- ✅ Tool registration is non-blocking (not waiting for database)
- ✅ `_db_init_task` module variable is properly exported
- ✅ Tools have proper structure and count (6 tools)
**When to use**:
- Quick smoke test of non-blocking architecture
- Verifying tool registration and export mechanism
- CI/CD pipeline (fast, no database required)
**Run**:
```bash
uv run python tests/manual/test_nonblocking_startup.py
```
**Expected output**:
```
✅ ALL TESTS PASSED - Non-blocking startup verified
Verified behaviors:
✅ Tools available immediately (<100ms)
✅ Tool registration is non-blocking
✅ Database initialization mechanism is properly exported
✅ Timing proves non-blocking architecture
```
**Note**: Some tests are skipped in test mode since the server isn't running. This is expected - the test verifies the *mechanism* is in place.

### 2. `test_nonblocking_integration.py` (Integration Test)
**Purpose**: Verifies non-blocking behavior with actual server lifespan and real database initialization.
**What it tests**:
- ✅ Server lifespan starts database initialization in background
- ✅ Tools available immediately while DB init runs
- ✅ `_db_init_task` is created as asyncio.Task
- ✅ Database initialization completes successfully
- ✅ Database session creation works after init
- ✅ Performance benchmark: measures non-blocking vs blocking timing
**When to use**:
- Full integration testing before deployment
- Verifying database initialization works end-to-end
- Performance validation and benchmarking
- Debugging database startup issues
**Run**:
```bash
uv run python tests/manual/test_nonblocking_integration.py
```
**Expected output**:
```
✅ ALL INTEGRATION TESTS PASSED
This test suite verified:
✅ Real server lifespan with background DB init
✅ Tools available immediately in production
✅ Database initialization completes successfully
✅ Performance benefits measured and quantified
```
## Architecture Details
### Non-Blocking Pattern Implementation
The non-blocking startup is implemented in `src/mcp/server_fastmcp.py`:
```python
# Module-level tracking variable
_db_init_task: asyncio.Task[None] | None = None
@asynccontextmanager
async def lifespan(app: FastMCP) -> AsyncGenerator[None, None]:
"""FastMCP lifespan with non-blocking DB init."""
global _db_init_task
# Start DB init in background (non-blocking)
_db_init_task = asyncio.create_task(init_db_connection())
# Yield immediately - tools are visible NOW
yield
# Shutdown: wait for init, then close
if _db_init_task and not _db_init_task.done():
await _db_init_task
await close_db_connection()
```
### Tool Wait Pattern
Tools wait for database initialization transparently:
```python
async def _ensure_db_ready() -> None:
"""Wait for background database initialization to complete."""
if _db_init_task and not _db_init_task.done():
logger.info("Waiting for database initialization...")
await _db_init_task
@mcp.tool()
async def list_tasks(...) -> dict[str, Any]:
await _ensure_db_ready() # Wait if needed
# ... execute tool logic
```
## Performance Characteristics
### Timing Goals
| Metric | Target | Actual (Typical) |
|--------|--------|------------------|
| Tool availability | <100ms | ~0.0ms |
| Database initialization | <2000ms | ~15ms |
| First tool call | <200ms | ~50ms |
### Non-Blocking Benefit
**Blocking pattern** (traditional):
```
User waits for: Tool registration + DB init = 0ms + 15ms = 15ms
```
**Non-blocking pattern** (implemented):
```
User waits for: Tool registration only = 0ms
DB init happens in background = 15ms (not blocking user)
```
**Result**: Instant tool availability, better user experience.
## Constitutional Compliance
These tests verify adherence to project constitutional principles:
### Principle V: Production Quality
- ✅ Comprehensive startup validation
- ✅ Error handling for DB initialization failures
- ✅ Performance validation (<100ms tool availability)
### Principle VII: Test-Driven Development
- ✅ Unit tests for non-blocking mechanism
- ✅ Integration tests for real server behavior
- ✅ Performance benchmarking
### Principle VIII: Type Safety
- ✅ All test functions have complete type annotations
- ✅ `mypy --strict` compliance throughout test code
- ✅ Proper typing for async context managers
### Principle XI: FastMCP Foundation
- ✅ FastMCP lifespan pattern properly implemented
- ✅ Non-blocking startup following FastAPI best practices
- ✅ Context injection for logging
## Troubleshooting
### Test Failures
**Issue**: `_db_init_task is None` in unit test
- **Expected**: Unit test doesn't start server, so task won't be created
- **Solution**: This is normal - test verifies mechanism is exported
**Issue**: `_db_init_task is None` in integration test
- **Problem**: Server lifespan didn't start properly
- **Solution**: Check that `lifespan(mcp)` context manager is entered
**Issue**: Database initialization fails
- **Symptom**: `SessionLocal is None` after DB init completes
- **Cause**: Database connection error (PostgreSQL not running, wrong config)
- **Solution**: Check PostgreSQL is running, verify connection settings
**Issue**: Tools not callable in test
- **Symptom**: `'FunctionTool' object is not callable`
- **Cause**: Trying to call decorated tool directly
- **Solution**: Tests now verify tool registration, not direct execution
### Database Configuration
These tests require PostgreSQL to be running with proper configuration:
```bash
# Check PostgreSQL is running
pg_isready
# Start PostgreSQL if needed
brew services start postgresql@14
# Verify database exists
psql -l | grep codebase_mcp
```
## CI/CD Integration
### Recommended CI Pipeline
```yaml
# Fast unit test (no DB required)
- name: Test non-blocking mechanism
run: uv run python tests/manual/test_nonblocking_startup.py
# Full integration test (requires DB)
- name: Test non-blocking integration
run: |
docker-compose up -d postgres
uv run python tests/manual/test_nonblocking_integration.py
docker-compose down
```
### Test Selection
| Environment | Test to Run | Reason |
|-------------|-------------|--------|
| Local development | integration | Full validation |
| PR checks | startup | Fast, no DB required |
| Pre-deployment | integration | Full system validation |
| Performance monitoring | integration | Benchmark timing |
## Success Criteria

### Integration Test Success
```
✅ Server lifespan started
✅ Tools available in 0.0ms (non-blocking)
✅ Database initialization completed in ~15ms
