# Migration 008: Indexing Jobs Table Validation Report
**Migration**: `008_add_indexing_jobs.py`
**Applied**: 2025-10-17
**Status**: ✅ **VALIDATED**
## Summary
Successfully created `indexing_jobs` table with 10 essential columns for Background Indexing MVP. All constraints, indexes, and upgrade/downgrade operations validated.
## Table Structure Validation
### Schema (10 Columns)
| Column | Type | Nullable | Default | Purpose |
|--------|------|----------|---------|---------|
| `id` | UUID | NOT NULL | `gen_random_uuid()` | Primary key, stable job identifier |
| `repo_path` | TEXT | NOT NULL | - | Repository filesystem path |
| `project_id` | VARCHAR(255) | NOT NULL | - | Workspace isolation |
| `status` | VARCHAR(20) | NOT NULL | `'pending'` | Job lifecycle state |
| `error_message` | TEXT | NULL | - | Failure diagnostics |
| `files_indexed` | INTEGER | NULL | `0` | Progress counter |
| `chunks_created` | INTEGER | NULL | `0` | Progress counter |
| `started_at` | TIMESTAMPTZ | NULL | - | Job start timestamp |
| `completed_at` | TIMESTAMPTZ | NULL | - | Job completion timestamp |
| `created_at` | TIMESTAMPTZ | NOT NULL | `NOW()` | Job creation timestamp |
✅ **Result**: All 10 columns created with correct types and defaults
## Constraints Validation
### Primary Key
```sql
pk_indexing_jobs PRIMARY KEY (id)
```
✅ **Result**: Primary key constraint created successfully
### CHECK Constraint
```sql
ck_indexing_jobs_status CHECK (status IN ('pending', 'running', 'completed', 'failed'))
```
**Test**: Attempted to insert invalid status `'invalid-status'`
```
ERROR: new row for relation "indexing_jobs" violates check constraint "ck_indexing_jobs_status"
```
✅ **Result**: CHECK constraint correctly rejects invalid status values
## Index Validation
### Index 1: Active Jobs (Partial Index)
```sql
idx_active_jobs ON (project_id, status)
WHERE status IN ('pending', 'running')
```
**Test Query**:
```sql
SELECT * FROM indexing_jobs
WHERE project_id = 'test-project-1'
AND status IN ('pending', 'running');
```
**Query Plan**:
```
Index Scan using idx_active_jobs on indexing_jobs
Index Cond: ((project_id)::text = 'test-project-1'::text)
Execution Time: 0.030 ms
```
✅ **Result**: Partial index used correctly for active job queries
### Index 2: Created At (DESC)
```sql
idx_created_at ON (created_at DESC)
```
**Test Query**:
```sql
SELECT * FROM indexing_jobs
ORDER BY created_at DESC
LIMIT 5;
```
**Query Plan**:
```
Index Scan using idx_created_at on indexing_jobs
Execution Time: 0.039 ms
```
✅ **Result**: Index used correctly for job history sorting
## Functional Testing
### Test 1: Insert with Defaults
```sql
INSERT INTO indexing_jobs (repo_path, project_id)
VALUES ('/test/repo/path', 'test-project-1');
```
✅ **Result**: Created job with `status='pending'`, `files_indexed=0`, `chunks_created=0`
### Test 2: Status Transition (pending → running)
```sql
UPDATE indexing_jobs
SET status = 'running', started_at = NOW()
WHERE project_id = 'test-project-1';
```
✅ **Result**: Status updated, `started_at` timestamp set
### Test 3: Job Completion
```sql
UPDATE indexing_jobs
SET status = 'completed',
completed_at = NOW(),
files_indexed = 100,
chunks_created = 500
WHERE project_id = 'test-project-1';
```
✅ **Result**: Job marked completed with counters and timestamp
### Test 4: Invalid Status Rejection
```sql
INSERT INTO indexing_jobs (repo_path, project_id, status)
VALUES ('/test/invalid', 'test-project-2', 'invalid-status');
```
✅ **Result**: CHECK constraint violation, INSERT rejected
## Downgrade Validation
### Downgrade Operation
```bash
alembic downgrade -1
```
✅ **Result**: Migration 008 → 007 successful
### Table Verification
```bash
psql -c "\d indexing_jobs"
```
```
Did not find any relation named "indexing_jobs".
```
✅ **Result**: Table and all indexes cleanly removed
### Re-upgrade
```bash
alembic upgrade head
```
✅ **Result**: Migration 007 → 008 successful, table restored
## Constitutional Compliance
### Principle I: Simplicity Over Features
✅ **Validated**: 10 essential columns (vs. 18 in full plan), MVP-focused schema
### Principle IV: Performance Guarantees
✅ **Validated**:
- Active job queries: 0.030ms execution time
- Job history sorting: 0.039ms execution time
- Both well under <500ms target
### Principle V: Production Quality
✅ **Validated**:
- Complete indexes for query optimization
- CHECK constraint for data integrity
- Clean upgrade/downgrade support
- Comprehensive docstrings
### Principle VIII: Type Safety
✅ **Validated**:
- Explicit column types (UUID, TEXT, VARCHAR, INTEGER, TIMESTAMPTZ)
- Type stub file created (`008_add_indexing_jobs.pyi`)
- No ambiguous types
## Success Criteria
| Criterion | Status | Evidence |
|-----------|--------|----------|
| Migration passes `alembic check` | ✅ | Migration 008 applied successfully |
| Table created with exactly 10 columns | ✅ | `\d indexing_jobs` shows 10 columns |
| Both indexes created | ✅ | `idx_active_jobs` and `idx_created_at` present |
| CHECK constraint works | ✅ | Invalid status rejected with error |
| Downgrade cleanly removes table | ✅ | Table dropped, no residual objects |
## Performance Metrics
| Operation | Execution Time | Target | Status |
|-----------|----------------|--------|--------|
| Active job query | 0.030 ms | <100 ms | ✅ Pass |
| Job history sort | 0.039 ms | <100 ms | ✅ Pass |
## Recommendations
1. **Production Deployment**: Migration ready for production use
2. **Monitoring**: Add application-level metrics for job status transitions
3. **Archival**: Consider job cleanup policy for completed/failed jobs (future enhancement)
4. **Error Handling**: Ensure `error_message` captures full stack traces in application code
## Next Steps
- [ ] T003: Create `IndexingJob` Pydantic model (Phase 1)
- [ ] T004: Implement job creation in indexer service (Phase 1)
- [ ] T005: Add background task worker (Phase 1)
