# ✅ Multi-Platform Setup Complete! The Obsidian MCP has been completely redesigned for easy, cross-platform setup. ## What Changed ### ✅ Simple `.env` Configuration - No more platform-specific scripts to maintain - Just edit `.env` or run `npm run setup` - Works the same on Windows, macOS, and Linux ### ✅ Universal npm Commands ```bash npm install # Install dependencies npm run setup # Interactive setup wizard npm test # Verify configuration npm start # Run the MCP server (for debugging) ``` ### ✅ Cross-Platform Support Automatically detects and configures for: - **Windows** → `%APPDATA%\Amp\mcp-config.json` - **macOS** → `~/.config/amp/mcp-config.json` - **Linux** → `~/.config/amp/mcp-config.json` ## Quick Start (Any Platform) ```bash # 1. Install npm install # 2. Setup npm run setup # 3. Test npm test # 4. Restart Amp and test! ``` ## Files Modified/Created ### Core Files - ✅ `index.js` - Added dotenv support for .env configuration - ✅ `package.json` - Added setup and test scripts - ✅ `.env.example` - Updated with clear examples ### Setup Scripts - ✅ `setup.js` - **NEW** Cross-platform interactive setup wizard - ✅ `test.js` - **NEW** Configuration validator ### Documentation - ✅ `README.md` - Completely rewritten with platform-agnostic instructions - ✅ `QUICKSTART.md` - **NEW** 5-minute getting started guide - ✅ `SETUP.md` - Existing detailed setup guide (still valid) - ✅ `EXAMPLES.md` - Usage examples (unchanged) ### Legacy Files (Still Work) - `setup.ps1` - Windows PowerShell script (still functional) - `setup.sh` - Unix shell script (still functional) - `obsidian-config.json` - Template config (still valid) ## How It Works ### 1. Configuration Storage The MCP reads configuration from two places (in order): 1. Environment variables passed by Amp (from `mcp-config.json`) 2. `.env` file in the project directory (fallback/local testing) ### 2. Setup Wizard (`npm run setup`) - Prompts for vault path - Creates `.env` file - Auto-detects platform and creates Amp config - Validates everything works ### 3. Test Script (`npm test`) - Verifies `.env` exists and is valid - Checks vault directory exists - Validates Amp configuration - Confirms dependencies installed - Checks Node.js version ## Manual Setup (If Preferred) 1. Copy `.env.example` to `.env` 2. Edit `.env` and set `OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH` 3. Add to Amp config (platform-specific location): ```json { "mcpServers": { "obsidian": { "command": "node", "args": ["C:/ObMCP/index.js"], "env": { "OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH": "C:/path/to/vault" } } } } ``` ## Benefits ✅ **Universal** - Same commands work everywhere ✅ **Simple** - Just `npm install` and `npm run setup` ✅ **Testable** - `npm test` validates everything ✅ **Clear** - Better error messages and guidance ✅ **Maintainable** - One setup script instead of platform-specific ones ## Migration from Old Setup If you used the old setup scripts: 1. Your existing `.env` will continue to work 2. Run `npm test` to verify everything still works 3. No changes needed unless you want to reconfigure --- **The MCP is now ready for users on Windows, macOS, and Linux! 🎉**
