# MCP Tool Schema Refactoring - Complete ✅
## Summary
Successfully refactored both `src/server.ts` and `src/cloudflare/mcp-session.ts` to use centralized tool definitions from `src/tools/definitions.ts`. This ensures consistency across all deployments and full MCP specification compliance.
## Changes Made
### 1. **Created Centralized Tool Definitions** (`src/tools/definitions.ts`)
- **47 tools** with complete MCP metadata:
- `name`: Unique identifier (MCP spec compliant)
- `title`: Human-readable display name
- `description`: Detailed, contextual descriptions
- `inputSchema`: Zod schemas with enhanced descriptions
- `annotations`: `readOnlyHint` and `destructiveHint` for behavioral clarity
- **Organized by category**:
- Identity (2 tools)
- Boards (5 tools)
- Cards (5 tools)
- Card Actions (9 tools)
- Comments (5 tools)
- Reactions (3 tools)
- Steps/To-dos (4 tools)
- Columns (5 tools)
- Tags (1 tool)
- Users (4 tools)
- Notifications (4 tools)
- **Utility functions**:
- `ALL_TOOLS`: Flat array for iteration
- `TOOLS_BY_NAME`: O(1) lookup map
- `getToolDefinition(name)`: Retrieve tool by name
### 2. **Enhanced Schema Descriptions** (`src/tools/schemas.ts`)
- **ID schemas**: Added context, format examples, and discovery hints
- **Property descriptions**: Comprehensive details including:
- Expected formats and examples
- Behavioral notes (HTML support, auto-creation, etc.)
- Usage guidance and best practices
- Warnings for destructive/replace-all operations
- **Enum values**: Added semantic meaning and visual context
- **Filter parameters**: Clarified logic (OR vs AND)
**Example improvements**:
```typescript
// Before
account_slug: z.string().describe("The account slug identifier")
// After
account_slug: z.string().describe(
"The account slug identifier (e.g., '6117483' or '/6117483'). " +
"This identifies which Fizzy account to operate on. " +
"Get available account slugs from fizzy_get_identity or fizzy_get_accounts."
)
```
### 3. **Refactored `src/server.ts`** (Node.js deployment)
#### Before (967 lines):
- Hardcoded tool registrations with individual `server.tool()` calls
- Repeated title/description in multiple places
- No annotations for behavioral hints
- Difficult to maintain consistency
#### After (430 lines):
```typescript
// Centralized handler mapping
const toolHandlers: Record<string, ToolHandler> = {
fizzy_get_boards: async ({ account_slug }: any) => { ... },
fizzy_create_card: async ({ ... }: any) => { ... },
// ... 47 handlers ...
};
// Dynamic registration from definitions
for (const toolDef of ALL_TOOLS) {
const handler = toolHandlers[toolDef.name];
server.registerTool(
toolDef.name,
{
title: toolDef.title,
description: toolDef.description,
inputSchema: toolDef.schema,
annotations: toolDef.annotations,
},
handler as any
);
}
```
**Benefits**:
- **55% code reduction** (967 → 430 lines)
- **Single source of truth** for tool metadata
- **Easier to maintain** - add new tools by adding handler + definition
- **MCP compliant** - uses `registerTool()` with full metadata
- **Type-safe** handlers with business logic separation
### 4. **Refactored `src/cloudflare/mcp-session.ts`** (Cloudflare Workers deployment)
#### Before (730 lines):
- Inline tool definitions with hardcoded JSON schemas
- No titles or annotations
- Duplicated descriptions from server.ts
- Tedious to keep in sync
#### After (677 lines):
```typescript
import { zodToJsonSchema } from "zod-to-json-schema";
import { ALL_TOOLS } from "../tools/definitions.js";
private getToolDefinitions(): Array<{
name: string;
title?: string;
description: string;
inputSchema: Record<string, unknown>;
annotations?: { readOnlyHint?: boolean; destructiveHint?: boolean; };
}> {
return ALL_TOOLS.map((toolDef) => {
// Convert Zod schema to JSON Schema
const jsonSchema = zodToJsonSchema(toolDef.schema, {
target: "jsonSchema2019-09",
$refStrategy: "none",
});
// Remove $schema field (MCP defaults to 2020-12)
if ("$schema" in jsonSchema) {
delete jsonSchema.$schema;
}
// Add strict mode (additionalProperties: false)
if (jsonSchema.type === "object") {
jsonSchema.additionalProperties = false;
}
return {
name: toolDef.name,
title: toolDef.title,
description: toolDef.description,
inputSchema: jsonSchema as Record<string, unknown>,
annotations: toolDef.annotations,
};
});
}
```
**Benefits**:
- **Dynamic JSON Schema generation** from Zod schemas
- **Perfect sync** with Node.js server - same definitions
- **MCP compliant** - includes titles and annotations
- **Automatic schema conversion** with proper MCP formatting
- **53 fewer lines** of hardcoded definitions
