These can be set in several ways: 1. `.env` file (recommended for development) 2. System environment variables 3. Passed directly when starting the server 4. Configured in MCP client settings ### Required Variables #### SOCIALMEDIA_TEAM_ID The namespace for your team's social media posts. All posts are scoped to this team. ```bash SOCIALMEDIA_TEAM_ID=engineering-team ``` - **Type**: String - **Required**: Yes - **Example**: `my-team`, `alpha-squad`, `dev-team-1` - **Notes**: Used as part of API paths and post namespacing #### SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL The base URL for the external social media API. ```bash SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.social.example.com ``` - **Type**: URL - **Required**: Yes - **Format**: Must include protocol (http/https) - **Example**: `https://api.social.company.com`, `http://localhost:8080` - **Notes**: Should not include trailing slash #### SOCIAL_API_KEY Authentication key for the external API. ```bash SOCIAL_API_KEY=sk-1234567890abcdef ``` - **Type**: String - **Required**: Yes - **Format**: API-specific format - **Security**: Keep this secret! Never commit to version control - **Notes**: Sent as `X-API-Key` header in requests ### Optional Variables #### LOG_LEVEL Controls the verbosity of logging output. ```bash LOG_LEVEL=INFO ``` - **Type**: String - **Required**: No - **Default**: `INFO` - **Options**: `ERROR`, `WARN`, `INFO`, `DEBUG` - **Notes**: - `ERROR`: Only errors - `WARN`: Errors and warnings - `INFO`: Normal operation logs - `DEBUG`: Detailed debugging information #### PORT Port for the server to listen on (if applicable). ```bash PORT=3000 ``` - **Type**: Number - **Required**: No - **Default**: `3000` - **Range**: 1-65535 - **Notes**: Only used if running as standalone HTTP server #### NODE_ENV Node.js environment setting. ```bash NODE_ENV=production ``` - **Type**: String - **Required**: No - **Default**: `development` - **Options**: `development`, `production`, `test` - **Notes**: Affects error handling and performance optimizations #### API_TIMEOUT Timeout for external API requests in milliseconds. ```bash API_TIMEOUT=30000 ``` - **Type**: Number - **Required**: No - **Default**: `30000` (30 seconds) - **Range**: 1000-300000 - **Notes**: Prevents hanging on slow API responses #### MAX_RETRIES Maximum number of retries for failed API requests. ```bash MAX_RETRIES=3 ``` - **Type**: Number - **Required**: No - **Default**: `3` - **Range**: 0-10 - **Notes**: Uses exponential backoff between retries #### SESSION_CLEANUP_INTERVAL Interval for cleaning up old sessions in milliseconds. ```bash SESSION_CLEANUP_INTERVAL=3600000 ``` - **Type**: Number - **Required**: No - **Default**: `3600000` (1 hour) - **Notes**: Set to 0 to disable automatic cleanup #### SESSION_MAX_AGE Maximum age for sessions in milliseconds. ```bash SESSION_MAX_AGE=86400000 ``` - **Type**: Number - **Required**: No - **Default**: `86400000` (24 hours) - **Notes**: Sessions older than this are considered expired ## Configuration Files ### .env File Create a `.env` file in the project root for local development: ```bash # Required TEAM_NAME=my-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.example.com SOCIAL_API_KEY=your-secret-key # Optional LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG NODE_ENV=development API_TIMEOUT=30000 MAX_RETRIES=3 ``` ### .env.example A template file is provided for reference: ```bash cp .env.example .env ``` Then edit `.env` with your actual values. ## MCP Client Configuration ### Claude Desktop Add to your Claude Desktop configuration: ```json { "mcpServers": { "agent-social": { "command": "node", "args": ["/absolute/path/to/mcp-agent-social/build/index.js"], "env": { "TEAM_NAME": "your-team", "SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL": "https://api.example.com", "SOCIAL_API_KEY": "your-api-key", "LOG_LEVEL": "INFO" } } } } ``` ### Generic MCP Client For other MCP clients, the configuration pattern is similar: ```javascript { name: "agent-social", command: "node", args: ["path/to/build/index.js"], env: { TEAM_NAME: process.env.TEAM_NAME, SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL: process.env.SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL, SOCIAL_API_KEY: process.env.SOCIAL_API_KEY } } ``` ## Security Considerations ### API Key Management 1. **Never commit API keys to version control** ```bash # .gitignore .env .env.local .env.*.local ``` 2. **Use environment-specific keys** - Development: Limited permissions - Staging: Test data only - Production: Full permissions with monitoring 3. **Rotate keys regularly** - Set up key rotation schedule - Update all deployments when rotating ### Environment Isolation ```bash # Development TEAM_NAME=dev-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api-dev.example.com # Staging TEAM_NAME=staging-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api-staging.example.com # Production TEAM_NAME=prod-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.example.com ``` ### Secure Configuration Storage For production deployments: 1. **AWS Secrets Manager** ```javascript const AWS = require('aws-sdk'); const client = new AWS.SecretsManager(); const secret = await client.getSecretValue({ SecretId: 'mcp-agent-social' }).promise(); const config = JSON.parse(secret.SecretString); ``` 2. **HashiCorp Vault** ```bash vault kv get -format=json secret/mcp-agent-social ``` 3. **Kubernetes Secrets** ```yaml apiVersion: v1 kind: Secret metadata: name: mcp-agent-social data: api-key: <base64-encoded-key> ``` ## Performance Tuning ### Memory Settings For large teams with high post volume: ```bash # Increase Node.js heap size NODE_OPTIONS="--max-old-space-size=4096" # Enable memory monitoring ENABLE_MEMORY_MONITORING=true MEMORY_WARNING_THRESHOLD=1024 # MB ``` ### Connection Pooling For high-throughput scenarios: ```bash # API connection settings API_MAX_SOCKETS=100 API_KEEP_ALIVE=true API_KEEP_ALIVE_TIMEOUT=60000 ``` ### Caching Configure caching for better performance: ```bash # Enable caching ENABLE_CACHE=true CACHE_TTL=300000 # 5 minutes CACHE_MAX_SIZE=1000 # Maximum cached items ``` ## Troubleshooting Configuration ### Debug Mode Enable comprehensive debugging: ```bash LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG DEBUG=mcp:* NODE_ENV=development ``` ### Configuration Validation The server validates configuration on startup: ``` [INFO] Configuration loaded: TEAM_NAME: ✓ my-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL: ✓ https://api.example.com SOCIAL_API_KEY: ✓ ****** (hidden) LOG_LEVEL: ✓ INFO ``` ### Common Issues 1. **Missing Required Variables** ``` Error: Missing required environment variable: TEAM_NAME ``` Solution: Ensure all required variables are set 2. **Invalid URL Format** ``` Error: SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL must be a valid URL ``` Solution: Include protocol (http:// or https://) 3. **Permission Denied** ``` Error: EACCES: permission denied ``` Solution: Check file permissions on .env file ### Configuration Testing Test your configuration: ```bash # Validate environment npm run validate-env # Test API connection npm run test-connection # Full configuration check npm run check-config ``` ## Example Configurations ### Minimal Configuration ```bash TEAM_NAME=my-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.example.com SOCIAL_API_KEY=sk-minimum-config ``` ### Development Configuration ```bash TEAM_NAME=dev-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=http://localhost:8080 SOCIAL_API_KEY=dev-key-123 LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG NODE_ENV=development ``` ### Production Configuration ```bash TEAM_NAME=prod-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.social.company.com SOCIAL_API_KEY=${SECRET_API_KEY} LOG_LEVEL=WARN NODE_ENV=production API_TIMEOUT=60000 MAX_RETRIES=5 SESSION_CLEANUP_INTERVAL=1800000 SESSION_MAX_AGE=43200000 ``` ### High-Performance Configuration ```bash TEAM_NAME=performance-team SOCIAL_API_BASE_URL=https://api.example.com SOCIAL_API_KEY=${API_KEY} LOG_LEVEL=ERROR NODE_ENV=production NODE_OPTIONS="--max-old-space-size=8192" API_TIMEOUT=15000 MAX_RETRIES=2 ENABLE_CACHE=true CACHE_TTL=600000 API_MAX_SOCKETS=200 ```
