MagicON RF Design Engines

Compare transmit chain alternatives

compare_rf_chains
Read-only

Multi-objective RF chain comparison: designs the primary chain with the convergent orchestrator, generates alternative chains by swapping components, scores every variant on cost / size / performance, and returns the ranked list with a Pareto frontier — the same engine as the Guided 'Compare Alternatives' panel (POST /api/rf-chain/design-multi). Call with no arguments after a chain design to compare that design.

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
weightsNoObjective weights {cost, size, performance}, each 0-1; normalized to sum 1.0. Defaults to balanced.
frequencyNoOperating frequency in GHz. Omit to reuse the conversation's designed chain.
max_chainsNoMax variants to return (1-20, default 8).
applicationNoApplication context (e.g. satcom_c_band, wifi_wlan). Derived from the frequency band when omitted.
user_requestNoThe end user's own words that prompted this call, verbatim. Used to verify that the figures you pass were stated by your user rather than inferred. Omit it and the results will be labelled caller-asserted.
target_output_powerNoTarget output power in dBm. Omit to reuse the conversation's designed chain.

A4.1/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With readOnlyHint=true already covering safety, the description adds real behavioral context: it discloses the multi-step pipeline, the cost/size/performance scoring axes, the Pareto-frontier return, and the backing engine/endpoint. It does not explain the apparent tension between readOnly and 'designs/generates' operations, but the annotation's safety signal is not contradicted.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

A single dense sentence, but it is front-loaded with the core purpose and every clause (pipeline stages, scoring axes, return shape, engine reference, invocation hint) earns its place. Slightly long but not padded.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

No output schema exists, and the description compensates by describing the return (ranked list with a Pareto frontier). For a 6-param all-optional tool it is nearly complete, missing only a note on what happens without a prior design.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so all six parameters are already documented, including their defaults and reuse semantics. The description adds only the no-argument invocation hint, so the baseline 3 is appropriate.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Multi-objective RF chain comparison') and enumerates the full behavior chain: designs the primary chain, generates alternatives, scores on cost/size/performance, returns a ranked Pareto list. This clearly distinguishes it from sibling design_rf_chain, which designs a single chain.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives an explicit trigger ('Call with no arguments after a chain design to compare that design') and a prerequisite (a prior chain design). It does not name a sibling alternative or state a when-not condition, so it stops short of the top band.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
