Jira Server MCP

Zero-dependency MCP server for self-hosted Jira Server / Data Center — works on Jira 8.x including pre-8.14 (no Personal Access Token needed).

A zero-dependency MCP server for Jira Server / Data Center, hand-written using the Python standard library. No pip install of any third-party packages is required; Python 3.8+ is enough.

Why do you need it

• Atlassian's official MCP only supports Jira Cloud, not on-premises deployments

• The popular open-source mcp-atlassian requires Jira Server 8.14+ because it depends on Personal Access Token (PAT)

• Many enterprises still use 8.13 and earlier versions, which have no PAT, so they can only use Basic Auth (username + password)

• This server supports both Basic Auth and PAT, covering all 8.x versions

Environment variables

Authentication: if JIRA_TOKEN is set, use Bearer Token (PAT); otherwise use JIRA_USERNAME + JIRA_PASSWORD for Basic Auth.

Installation and running

Choose any one of the three methods:

Security notes

• Credentials are stored in plain text in the client configuration; do not commit them to Git. It is recommended to use a dedicated bot account and apply least-privilege permissions (view/create/edit/comment/transition/assign only; do not enable delete or system administration).

• If multiple people need to share it, consider deploying the server as an HTTP MCP Server with unified authentication, rather than having each person store their own password.
