# ClickUp MCP Integration Test Execution Plan
**Created:** 2025-11-01
**Status:** In Progress
**Estimated Duration:** 3.5-5.5 hours
## Phase 0: Document This Plan
- Save this plan to `.claude/plans/2025-11-01-clickup-mcp-test-execution-plan.md`
- Write plan path to `.claude/.last_plan_path` for todo→plan linking
## Phase 1: Pre-Flight Checks & Environment Setup (10 minutes)
### 1.1: Verify Dependencies
- Run `npm install` to ensure all packages are installed
- Verify build exists or rebuild: `npm run build`
- Check that `build/index.js` is executable
### 1.2: Configure Environment Variables
- Update `.env` file with provided credentials:
- `CLICKUP_API_KEY=pk_10602410_G8BRQAO22JBWMJI2X5CXXZBYEFVKA5OD`
- `CLICKUP_TEAM_ID=42051537` (already set)
- `CLICKUP_TEST_SPACE_ID=` (leave empty for auto-creation)
- Optional: `LOG_LEVEL=info`, `INTEGRATION_TEST_TIMEOUT=30000`
### 1.3: Validate API Connectivity
- Test ClickUp API access with curl or API call
- Verify team ID is accessible with provided token
- Confirm permissions are sufficient for test operations
## Phase 2: MCP Server Configuration (15 minutes)
### 2.1: Add Local MCP Server to ~/.claude.json
- Add new server entry: `clickup-local-test`
- Configuration:
```json
"clickup-local-test": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/Users/johnfreier/initiatives/projects/clickup-mcp-server/build/index.js"],
"env": {
"CLICKUP_API_KEY": "pk_10602410_G8BRQAO22JBWMJI2X5CXXZBYEFVKA5OD",
"CLICKUP_TEAM_ID": "42051537",
"NODE_ENV": "test",
"LOG_LEVEL": "info"
}
}
```
### 2.2: Verify MCP Server Functionality
- Test server can be started manually
- Verify it responds to basic MCP protocol commands
- Confirm credentials are working
## Phase 3: Test Environment Creation (15 minutes)
### 3.1: Create ClickUp Test Space
- Either manually create space "MCP-Integration-Tests-2025" or
- Let `setup.ts` auto-create on first test run
- Record space ID if manually created
### 3.2: Validate Test Infrastructure
- Run single authentication test to validate setup:
- `npm test tests/integration/authentication.test.ts -- --reporter=verbose`
- Verify test space/folder/list are created automatically
- Confirm cleanup works properly
## Phase 4: Core Test Suite Execution (30 minutes)
### 4.1: Run Core Integration Tests (9 files)
Execute in order:
1. `authentication.test.ts` (5 tests) - Validates credentials
2. `task-lifecycle.test.ts` (15 tests) - CRUD operations
3. `dependencies.test.ts` (12 tests) - Task relationships
4. `subtasks.test.ts` (10 tests) - Hierarchical tasks
5. `custom-fields.test.ts` (8 tests) - Field management
6. `comments.test.ts` (8 tests) - Comment operations
7. `bulk-operations.test.ts` (8 tests) - Batch processing
8. `error-handling.test.ts` (10 tests) - Error scenarios
9. `tier-enforcement.test.ts` (6 tests) - Free vs premium
### 4.2: Document Core Test Results
- Record pass/fail status for each test file
- Note any failures with error messages
- Measure execution time and performance
- Identify any flaky tests (re-run if needed)
## Phase 5: Advanced Test Suite Execution (20 minutes)
### 5.1: Run Advanced Scenario Tests (3 files)
1. `workflows.test.ts` (10 tests) - Multi-step workflows
2. `concurrency.test.ts` (10 tests) - Parallel operations
3. `data-integrity.test.ts` (10 tests) - Consistency checks
### 5.2: Document Advanced Test Results
- Record pass/fail status
- Note performance characteristics
- Identify any race conditions or timing issues
## Phase 6: Full Suite with Coverage (30 minutes)
### 6.1: Execute Complete Test Suite
- Run: `npm run test:coverage tests/integration`
- Generate coverage report
- Expected: 112 tests passing in ~45 seconds
### 6.2: Analyze Coverage Report
- Review coverage by file/function
- Identify any gaps in coverage
- Document actual vs expected coverage
### 6.3: Address Any Failures
- For each failing test:
- Analyze error message and stack trace
- Determine if server issue or test issue
- Document finding in MCP-SERVER-REVISION-NOTES.md if server bug
- Fix test if test issue
- Re-run to verify fix
## Phase 7: CI/CD Pipeline Setup (2-4 hours)
### 7.1: Configure GitHub Secrets
- Add repository secrets:
- `CLICKUP_API_KEY`
- `CLICKUP_TEAM_ID`
- `CLICKUP_TEST_SPACE_ID` (if manually created)
### 7.2: Create GitHub Actions Workflow
- Follow template from `docs-to-persist/CI-CD-TEST-INTEGRATION-PLAN.md`
- Create `.github/workflows/integration-tests.yml`
- Configure triggers: PR, push to main/develop, daily schedule
### 7.3: Set Up Branch Protection Rules
- Require "Integration Tests" status check to pass
- Require 1 approval
- Require branches to be up to date
- Enable "Require conversation resolution"
### 7.4: Test CI/CD Pipeline
- Create test branch and PR
- Verify workflow runs automatically
- Confirm tests execute in CI environment
- Validate branch protection prevents merging on failure
## Phase 8: Documentation & Reporting (30 minutes)
### 8.1: Update Test Status Report
- Update `docs-to-persist/INITIAL-TEST-STATUS.md` with actual results
- Document any deviations from expected behavior
- Record actual execution times vs benchmarks
### 8.2: Document Issues & Improvements
- Update `docs-to-persist/MCP-SERVER-REVISION-NOTES.md` with any new findings
- Prioritize server improvements based on test results
- Document test improvements needed
### 8.3: Create Solution Summary
- Save to `.claude/plans/2025-11-01-clickup-mcp-test-execution-plan-solution-summary.md`
- Include:
- What was accomplished
- Test results summary (pass/fail/flaky)
- Performance metrics
- Issues encountered and resolutions
- CI/CD setup status
- Next steps and recommendations
## Success Criteria
- ✅ All 112 integration tests passing
- ✅ Test execution time < 60 seconds
- ✅ 100% test coverage maintained
- ✅ No flaky tests (or documented and quarantined)
- ✅ CI/CD pipeline operational
- ✅ Branch protection enabled
- ✅ Complete documentation of results
## Risk Mitigation
**If tests fail due to API rate limiting:**
- Add delays between tests
- Run tests sequentially: `npm test -- --maxConcurrency=1`
- Reduce batch sizes in bulk operation tests
**If test space creation fails:**
- Manually create space in ClickUp UI
- Add space ID to `CLICKUP_TEST_SPACE_ID` in .env
- Re-run tests
**If custom field tests fail:**
- Verify ClickUp tier supports custom fields
- Check custom field limits for free tier
- Document limitation and skip tests if needed
**If cleanup fails:**
- Manually delete test space in ClickUp UI
- Reset test environment
- Re-run tests with fresh space
