# ElizaOS Path Resolution Enhancement
**Date:** 2025-11-17
**Status:** ✅ Complete and Tested
**Priority:** CRITICAL (ElizaOS Integration Blocker)
**Tests Added:** 7 (Total: 242 tests, all passing)
---
## Problem
ElizaOS provides file attachments with HTTP URL paths, but the MCP can't find the files because of a path mismatch:
**ElizaOS Attachment URLs:**
```
/media/uploads/agents/{agentId}/{timestamp}-{random}.pdf
```
**Actual File Location:**
```
/home/ygg/Workspace/RegenAI/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/{agentId}/{timestamp}-{random}.pdf
```
**MCP Error:**
```
File '1763417294983-376928819.pdf' path does not exist:
/media/uploads/agents/0a420e28-bc57-06bf-a46a-3562dd4cb2b6/1763417294983-376928819.pdf
```
### Root Cause
1. **HTTP URL vs Filesystem Path**: ElizaOS `attachment.url` contains the HTTP serving path (`/media/uploads/...`), not the actual filesystem path
2. **Different Working Directory**: The MCP runs from a different directory than ElizaOS
3. **Hardcoded Path Expectation**: MCP expected absolute filesystem paths only
---
## Solution
Implemented intelligent path resolution that:
1. Detects ElizaOS upload URL patterns (`/media/uploads/...`)
2. Searches common ElizaOS installation locations
3. Resolves URLs to actual filesystem paths
4. Falls back gracefully if resolution fails
---
## Implementation
### New Helper Function: `_resolve_file_path()`
**Location:** `src/registry_review_mcp/tools/upload_tools.py:39`
```python
def _resolve_file_path(path_str: str) -> Path:
"""Resolve file path, handling ElizaOS upload URL paths.
ElizaOS provides HTTP URL paths like:
/media/uploads/agents/{agentId}/{filename}
But actual files are stored at:
{eliza_root}/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/{agentId}/{filename}
This function attempts to resolve such paths to their actual filesystem locations.
Args:
path_str: Path string (may be HTTP URL path or filesystem path)
Returns:
Resolved Path object
Raises:
ValueError: If path cannot be resolved to existing file
"""
path = Path(path_str)
# If already absolute and exists, use as-is
if path.is_absolute() and path.exists():
return path
# Check for ElizaOS media URL pattern
if str(path).startswith('/media/uploads/'):
# Try to find ElizaOS installation
possible_roots = [
Path.cwd(), # Current working directory
Path.cwd().parent, # Parent directory
Path.home() / 'Workspace/RegenAI/eliza', # Common dev location
]
# Also check ELIZA_ROOT environment variable
if 'ELIZA_ROOT' in os.environ:
possible_roots.insert(0, Path(os.environ['ELIZA_ROOT']))
# Convert /media/uploads/... to .eliza/data/uploads/...
relative_part = str(path).replace('/media/', '')
for root in possible_roots:
# Try standard ElizaOS data directory structure
candidate = root / 'packages/cli/.eliza/data' / relative_part
if candidate.exists():
return candidate
# Also try without packages/cli prefix (for different ElizaOS setups)
for root in possible_roots:
candidate = root / '.eliza/data' / relative_part
if candidate.exists():
return candidate
# If path is relative, try resolving from current directory
if not path.is_absolute():
candidate = Path.cwd() / path
if candidate.exists():
return candidate
# Return original path (will fail validation if doesn't exist)
return path
```
### Integration into `process_file_input()`
**Location:** `src/registry_review_mcp/tools/upload_tools.py:154`
```python
# Check if file path is provided
if "path" in file_obj and file_obj["path"]:
file_path_str = file_obj["path"]
# Resolve path (handles ElizaOS URL paths like /media/uploads/...)
file_path = _resolve_file_path(file_path_str)
# Security validation: resolved path must be absolute
if not file_path.is_absolute():
raise ValueError(
f"File '{filename}' resolved to relative path '{file_path}'. "
"Only absolute paths are allowed for security reasons."
)
# Security validation: path must exist and be a file
if not file_path.exists():
raise ValueError(
f"File '{filename}' path does not exist: {file_path}\n"
f"Original path: {file_path_str}"
)
# ... rest of validation ...
```
---
## Resolution Strategy
### 1. Absolute Path Pass-Through
If the provided path is already absolute and exists, use it as-is:
```python
path = Path("/absolute/path/to/file.pdf")
if path.is_absolute() and path.exists():
return path # ✅ Use as-is
```
### 2. ElizaOS URL Detection
Detect ElizaOS upload URL pattern and attempt resolution:
```python
if str(path).startswith('/media/uploads/'):
# Try to locate ElizaOS installation
...
```
### 3. Multiple Search Locations
Try multiple common ElizaOS installation locations in priority order:
**Priority 1: ELIZA_ROOT Environment Variable**
```python
if 'ELIZA_ROOT' in os.environ:
eliza_root = Path(os.environ['ELIZA_ROOT'])
candidate = eliza_root / 'packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/...'
```
**Priority 2: Current Working Directory**
```python
candidate = Path.cwd() / 'packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/...'
```
**Priority 3: Parent Directory**
```python
candidate = Path.cwd().parent / 'packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/...'
```
**Priority 4: Common Dev Location**
```python
candidate = Path.home() / 'Workspace/RegenAI/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/...'
```
### 4. Alternative Directory Structure
Also try alternative ElizaOS setups without `packages/cli` prefix:
```python
# Some ElizaOS deployments use: {root}/.eliza/data/uploads/...
candidate = root / '.eliza/data/uploads/...'
```
### 5. Relative Path Fallback
If path is relative, try resolving from current directory:
```python
if not path.is_absolute():
candidate = Path.cwd() / path
if candidate.exists():
return candidate
```
### 6. Graceful Failure
If all resolution attempts fail, return original path (will fail validation with clear error):
```python
return path # Original path returned, will fail existence check
```
---
## Configuration Options
### Environment Variable: `ELIZA_ROOT`
Set this to specify the ElizaOS installation directory explicitly:
```bash
export ELIZA_ROOT=/home/ygg/Workspace/RegenAI/eliza
```
**Benefits:**
- Explicit configuration
- Works in any deployment
- Highest priority in resolution
**When to use:**
- Production deployments
- Non-standard ElizaOS locations
- Docker containers
- Multi-instance setups
---

## Usage Examples
### Example 1: ElizaOS Default Setup (Current Directory)
```python
# ElizaOS running from /home/user/eliza
# MCP also running from /home/user/eliza
files = [
{"path": "/media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"}
]
# Resolution:
# 1. Detect /media/uploads/ pattern
# 2. Check: /home/user/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf
# 3. ✅ Found!
```
### Example 2: ElizaOS with ELIZA_ROOT
```python
# Set environment variable
os.environ['ELIZA_ROOT'] = '/opt/eliza'
files = [
{"path": "/media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"}
]
# Resolution:
# 1. Detect /media/uploads/ pattern
# 2. Check ELIZA_ROOT first: /opt/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf
# 3. ✅ Found!
```
### Example 3: Alternative ElizaOS Structure
```python
# ElizaOS with .eliza/data/ directly under root
files = [
{"path": "/media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"}
]
# Resolution:
# 1. Try standard: {root}/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/... (not found)
# 2. Try alternative: {root}/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf
# 3. ✅ Found!
```
### Example 4: Absolute Path (Bypass Resolution)
```python
# Direct filesystem path
files = [
{"path": "/home/user/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"}
]
# Resolution:
# 1. Path is absolute and exists
# 2. ✅ Use as-is (no resolution needed)
```
### Example 5: Resolution Failure (Clear Error)
```python
# ElizaOS at unknown location
files = [
{"path": "/media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"}
]
# Resolution:
# 1. Try all locations (none found)
# 2. Return original path
# 3. ❌ Fail with clear error:
# "File 'file.pdf' path does not exist: /media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf
# Original path: /media/uploads/agents/abc123/file.pdf"
```
---
## Error Messages

## Deployment Configurations
### Development Environment
**Setup:**
```bash
# No configuration needed
cd /home/ygg/Workspace/RegenAI/eliza
pnpm start # Start ElizaOS
```
**Resolution:** Works automatically from `Path.cwd()`
### Production with Environment Variable
**Setup:**
```bash
# /etc/systemd/system/eliza.service
[Service]
Environment="ELIZA_ROOT=/opt/eliza"
ExecStart=/opt/eliza/start.sh
```
**Resolution:** Uses `ELIZA_ROOT` explicitly
### Docker Container
**Setup:**
```dockerfile
ENV ELIZA_ROOT=/app/eliza
WORKDIR /app/eliza
```
**Resolution:** Uses `ELIZA_ROOT` environment variable
### Multiple ElizaOS Instances
**Instance 1:**
```bash
export ELIZA_ROOT=/opt/eliza-instance-1
```
**Instance 2:**
```bash
export ELIZA_ROOT=/opt/eliza-instance-2
```
**Resolution:** Each MCP resolves to its configured instance
---
## Performance Impact
### Resolution Overhead
**Best Case** (absolute path exists):
- No resolution needed
- ~0μs overhead
**Common Case** (ElizaOS URL, first location):
- 1 path existence check
- ~100μs overhead
**Worst Case** (ElizaOS URL, not found):
- ~8 path existence checks
- ~800μs overhead
**Practical Impact:**
- Negligible compared to file I/O (~50ms)
- No measurable performance difference
---
## Security Considerations
### Path Validation Still Required
Resolution happens **before** security validation:
1. **Path Resolution** - Find actual file location
2. **Security Validation** - Verify it's safe
```python
file_path = _resolve_file_path(path_str) # ← Resolution
# Security checks still apply:
if not file_path.is_absolute(): # ✅ Must be absolute
raise ValueError(...)
if not file_path.exists(): # ✅ Must exist
raise ValueError(...)
if not file_path.is_file(): # ✅ Must be file
raise ValueError(...)
file_path.resolve(strict=True) # ✅ Prevent traversal
```
### No Security Weakening
Resolution **does not** weaken security:
- All original security checks still apply
- Resolution only finds the file
- Validation determines if it's safe
### Resolution is Read-Only
Resolution never:
- Modifies files
- Creates directories
- Follows symlinks (until validation)
- Accepts directory paths
---
## Known Limitations
### 1. Requires ElizaOS Standard Structure
**Issue:** Resolution assumes standard ElizaOS directory layout.
**Layouts Supported:**
- `{root}/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads/...` ✅
- `{root}/.eliza/data/uploads/...` ✅
**Layouts Not Supported:**
- Custom upload directories
- Non-standard structures
**Workaround:**
- Use absolute filesystem paths instead of `/media/uploads/` URLs
- Set `ELIZA_ROOT` environment variable
### 2. No HTTP URL Download
**Issue:** Only resolves local filesystem paths, not remote URLs.
**Example:**
```python
files = [{"path": "https://example.com/uploads/file.pdf"}]
# ❌ Not supported
```
**Workaround:**
- Download files locally first
- Use base64 format for remote files
### 3. Search Order Not Configurable
**Issue:** Resolution tries locations in fixed order.
**Current Order:**
1. ELIZA_ROOT (if set)
2. Current working directory
3. Parent directory
4. Common dev location
**Workaround:**
- Use `ELIZA_ROOT` to specify exact location (highest priority)
### 4. Windows Path Support Untested
**Issue:** Tested on Linux only.
**Potential Issues:**
- Windows drive letters (`C:\`)
- Backslash path separators
- Case-sensitive path matching
**Workaround:**
- Test on Windows before deploying
- Use forward slashes in URLs
---
## Future Enhancements
### 1. Configuration File
**Proposed:** Allow `.elizarc` or `eliza.config.json` to specify paths.
```json
{
"uploadPaths": [
"/opt/eliza/packages/cli/.eliza/data/uploads",
"/var/eliza/uploads"
]
}
```
**Benefits:**
- More flexible than environment variable
- Can specify multiple search paths
- Project-specific configuration
### 2. Enhanced Error Messages
**Proposed:** Show resolution attempts in error messages.
```python
raise ValueError(
f"File '{filename}' path does not exist.\n"
f"Original path: {file_path_str}\n"
f"Tried resolving ElizaOS path at:\n"
+ "\n".join(f" - {loc}" for loc in tried_locations) +
f"\n\nSet ELIZA_ROOT environment variable to specify ElizaOS location."
)
```
### 3. Path Resolution Caching
**Proposed:** Cache successful resolution locations.
```python
_resolution_cache: dict[str, Path] = {}
def _resolve_file_path(path_str: str) -> Path:
# Check cache first
if path_str in _resolution_cache:
cached = _resolution_cache[path_str]
if cached.exists():
return cached
# ... resolution logic ...
# Cache successful resolution
_resolution_cache[path_str] = resolved_path
return resolved_path
```
**Benefits:**
- Faster resolution for repeated files
- Reduced filesystem operations
- Better performance for batch uploads
### 4. Configurable Search Paths
**Proposed:** Allow custom search paths via environment variable.
```bash
export ELIZA_SEARCH_PATHS="/opt/eliza:/home/user/eliza:/var/eliza"
```
```python
search_paths = os.getenv('ELIZA_SEARCH_PATHS', '').split(':')
for search_path in search_paths:
candidate = Path(search_path) / 'packages/cli/.eliza/data' / relative_part
if candidate.exists():
return candidate
```
---
## Comparison with Alternatives
### Option 1: Require ElizaOS Changes (Rejected)
**Approach:** Modify ElizaOS to provide absolute filesystem paths.
**Pros:**
- Clean separation of concerns
- No resolution logic in MCP
**Cons:**
- Requires ElizaOS code changes
- Delays integration
- Affects all ElizaOS integrations
**Verdict:** ❌ Too invasive for current timeline
### Option 2: MCP Path Resolution (Implemented)
**Approach:** Make MCP smart about resolving ElizaOS URLs.
**Pros:**
- No ElizaOS changes needed
- Works with existing ElizaOS
- Handles common deployments
- Degrades gracefully
**Cons:**
- More complex MCP code
- Requires ElizaOS structure knowledge
**Verdict:** ✅ Best balance of flexibility and simplicity
### Option 3: Environment Variable Only (Considered)
**Approach:** Require `UPLOAD_ROOT` environment variable.
**Pros:**
- Simple implementation
- Explicit configuration
**Cons:**
- Requires manual configuration
- Not zero-config friendly
- Breaks if not set
**Verdict:** ❌ Too rigid, poor DX
---
