chewy_variants

Read-only

Every purchasable variant of a Chewy product -- every size, flavor or color it is sold in -- with each variant's own part number, price, Autoship price, stock, images, and the defining option that distinguishes it (e.g. Size = Medium). id is the numeric id from any chewy.com PDP URL; passing any one variant's id returns that variant's whole family, and the one you asked for is flagged is_requested. Answers what chewy_product cannot: chewy_product describes only the single variant it was given and names its parent, but never lists the siblings or their prices. Only the defining option is returned -- use chewy_item_attributes for the full attribute table.

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
idYesRequired. The numeric id from a chewy.com PDP URL, e.g. 185468 from https://www.chewy.com/<any-slug>/dp/185468. Any variant's id resolves the same roster -- the response is keyed by that variant's parent product.

Output Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
dataYesThe tool result payload (shape varies per tool; see each tool's docs resource).

A4.6/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint and openWorldHint, so the safety profile is covered. The description adds genuine behavioral context: any one variant's id returns the whole family, the requested variant is flagged is_requested, the response is keyed by the parent product, and only the defining option is returned (not the full attribute table).

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the core purpose and scope, then the id semantics, then sibling differentiation. It is dense and runs long, but each sentence carries distinct, non-redundant information; little could be cut without losing routing value.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a single-parameter variant-listing tool with an output schema, this covers everything an agent needs: what is returned, how the id resolves, the is_requested flag, and when to prefer chewy_product or chewy_item_attributes instead.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100% and there is a single parameter, so the schema already documents the id field. The description nevertheless adds meaning the schema alone lacks: the id comes from any PDP URL, any variant resolves the same roster, and the response is keyed by the parent product.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific resource (every purchasable variant of a Chewy product) with the exact fields returned (part number, price, Autoship price, stock, images, defining option). It explicitly contrasts itself with chewy_product and chewy_item_attributes, so an agent can distinguish it from siblings without opening a schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Names the alternatives and the conditions that select them: chewy_product describes only the single variant, chewy_item_attributes holds the full attribute table, and this tool answers sibling rosters and prices. It also tells the agent which id to supply (any PDP URL variant id) and how it resolves.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
