research_read
Read-only

A3.9/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Far exceeds what the annotations declare: it states the per-call character ceiling (48,000; 30,000 of extracts and 128 fragments in 'breve'), that non_consegnate pages must be re-requested, that 'parziale' pages resume where they stopped, that pages without locatable matches are not counted as read, that the registry is in-process and lost on restart, and that OCR text is data to study rather than instructions. It also explains richiesta_id replay-vs-advance semantics and the 64-response / 4 MiB per-plan caps.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness3/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Information-dense but structured as one long parenthetical-heavy block with no line breaks or bullets, making the mode definitions hard to scan. The leading clause is a good summary, but the remainder packs limits, state semantics and citation rules into run-on sentences where each rule does not clearly earn its own space.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists, so return shapes need not be explained, and the description still covers budget, resumption, citation ids and state lifetime. What is missing is the origin/meaning of the required 'piano' argument and any statement of how this tool relates to research_continue, which is the most likely source of misselection in this sibling set.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

With 0% schema coverage the description carries the full burden and mostly does: it gives page counts per mode (1-60, 1-24) matching the schema bounds, describes the char budget, and fully specifies richiesta_id's format and replay behavior. Gaps remain — 'piano' is never explained, and 'contesto (= riscontri)' conflates two distinct enum values, leaving 'riscontri' ambiguous.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The opening sentence gives a specific verb and resource ('Legge le pagine', layered by depth) and the description then defines the three read depths precisely. It does not, however, distinguish itself from look-alike siblings such as research_continue, read_pages or read_passages, so an agent cannot tell from the text alone which tool owns this operation.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Guidance exists but only at the mode level: 'breve' is enough for lists, births, marriages, offers and appointments; 'contesto' is 'per capire un articolo'; 'integrale' is the whole page. There is no guidance on when to reach for research_read versus research_continue or the generic read_pages/read_passages siblings, and no stated prerequisites for obtaining a 'piano'.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
