traverse_path

Walk the knowledge graph from one entity in a single call. start: an entity @id or a name (resolved like fuzzy_find_and_traverse). path: one entry per hop, each a predicate or a list of predicates; prefix a predicate with ^ to follow it backwards (e.g. ^worksFor finds who works for an organisation). Literal values (dates, names, emails) named in a hop are returned in values. Example, who founded the company Hamza works for and when: start "Hamza Ashraf", path [["worksFor"], ["founder", "foundingDate"]]. Without path, follows every link for maxHops (1-3, default 2) and returns links only, with a budget of 100 rows shared between hops, so hubs are cut short rather than hiding later hops (use a path to go deeper: a path call may return up to 400 rows). Returns edges [{hop, from, predicate, to, to_name, to_types}], values [{hop, subject, subject_name, predicate, value}], truncated and truncated_hops (the hops that hit a limit).

A4.2/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

No annotations are provided, so the description carries the full behavioral burden, and it does so well: it discloses the 100-row shared budget across hops, the hub-truncation behavior, the 400-row ceiling for path calls, and the truncated/truncated_hops signals. It omits read-only/auth expectations and any error behavior, keeping it from a 5.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is a single dense paragraph, but it is front-loaded with the core action and each clause carries information (semantics, example, default behavior, return shape). It is long for a field description, though not padded.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a complex multi-hop traversal tool with no annotations, the description covers inputs, modes, limits, and return shape, and an output schema exists so return values did not need spelling out. It lacks any permission/auth or error-handling context, so it is not fully complete.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters5/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 0%, so the description must compensate for all three parameters, and it does: start (entity @id or name resolved like fuzzy_find_and_traverse), path (one entry per hop, predicate or list of predicates, ^ prefix for reverse edges), and maxHops (1-3, default 2). It even documents the default no-path behavior, adding meaning well beyond the bare schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The first sentence gives a specific verb and resource ('Walk the knowledge graph from one entity in a single call') and the 'single call' framing implies multi-hop traversal versus the single-lookup siblings. It does not explicitly distinguish itself from query_relationships or get_entity, so it stops short of a 5.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It clearly explains the two operating modes and when each applies: without a path it follows every link for maxHops and returns links only; with a path you can go deeper. It also names fuzzy_find_and_traverse as the resolution reference, but never states when to prefer this tool over sibling tools like query_relationships.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
