Approve or reject a time off request

talenthr_reply_time_off_request
Destructive

WRITE: approve (accept=true) or reject (accept=false) a pending time off request. TalentHR automatically E-MAILS THE EMPLOYEE the decision. A request that was already answered or canceled cannot be answered again. Only do this when the user explicitly asked for that decision on that request (find ids with talenthr_list_employee_time_off_requests or talenthr_get_calendar).

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
acceptYestrue = approve, false = reject.
employee_idYesThe id of the employee who made the request.
time_off_request_idYesThe time off request id.

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations (destructive/non-idempotent already declared) by disclosing the real-world side effect that the employee is automatically e-mailed the decision, and the state rule that an already-answered or canceled request cannot be answered again. That e-mail side effect and the terminal-state constraint are exactly the facts an agent needs before committing a destructive write.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three sentences, all front-loaded: action and flag mapping first, then side effects/constraints, then the usage guardrail. No filler, and the most decision-relevant facts (WRITE, e-mail, already-answered restriction) appear before the routing hints.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 3-required-parameter destructive tool with no output schema, the description covers action semantics, irreversibility signals, terminal-state behavior, id sourcing, and the confirmation requirement. Nothing an agent needs to call it safely and correctly is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100% and the schema already documents accept=true/false plus both id parameters, so the description's accept mapping is redundant. It adds no format or provenance detail for employee_id and time_off_request_id beyond naming the sibling tools that produce those ids, which is standard baseline when the schema carries the load.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Opens with an explicit mutation marker (WRITE) and names both the verb and the resource: approve/reject a pending time off request, with the accept flag mapping spelled out. Clearly distinct from the sibling talenthr_create_time_off_request, which creates rather than answers a request.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

States the precondition explicitly ('Only do this when the user explicitly asked for that decision on that request') and routes id discovery to the two concrete alternatives, talenthr_list_employee_time_off_requests and talenthr_get_calendar. No inference needed about when to call this versus the list tools.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
