Get live exchange rates

currencylayer_get_live_rates
Destructive

SPENDS 1 request of your currencylayer monthly quota per call (also when it fails after authentication; it is never retried). Real-time exchange rates for up to 174 world currencies and precious metals relative to a source currency (default USD). Quotes are keyed by pair, e.g. USDEUR = 0.918 means 1 USD = 0.918 EUR. The free plan refreshes daily, higher plans hourly down to every 60 seconds. Use 'currencies' to limit the reply. GET /live.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
sourceNoSource (base) currency code, default USD. Needs the Basic plan or higher; every quote is then SOURCE+TARGET, e.g. EURGBP.
currenciesNoOnly these currency codes, e.g. ["EUR","GBP","JPY"] (default: all of them).

TDQS

A4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations by disclosing quota cost per call, that a failed call after authentication still consumes quota, and that it is never retried — exactly the operational facts an agent needs before spending a limited resource. It does not cover error responses or the response envelope, which keeps it off a 5.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loads the cost warning, then purpose, then quote-format semantics, then the parameter tip, closing with the endpoint. Five short sentences, none redundant, each carrying distinct information.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description compensates by explaining the pair-keyed quote format so the agent can interpret results. It is nearly complete for a simple two-parameter read; only the response wrapper (success/timestamp fields) and failure behavior are unspecified.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100% and the schema already documents the default USD source, the Basic-plan requirement, and the SOURCE+TARGET quote pattern, so the description is largely restating structured data. The 'USDEUR = 0.918' example and the 'use currencies to limit the reply' note add mild interpretive value, consistent with the baseline 3.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource: real-time exchange rates for 174 currencies and precious metals against a source currency, anchored to the endpoint GET /live. The word 'Real-time' implicitly but clearly separates it from currencylayer_get_historical_rates and currencylayer_get_timeframe_rates.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives useful context on plan tiers (free = daily refresh, higher plans down to 60s) and hints 'Use currencies to limit the reply', which is implied narrowing guidance. However, it never says when to prefer a sibling such as convert_currency or get_historical_rates, so the agent must infer the routing from names alone.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
