What the catalogue knows, and where

list_niches
Read-only

The trades (niches) this catalogue holds near a place, by key, with how many businesses are inside the radius (default 15 miles). Without niche: a compact list of keys. With niche: that trade in full — its tags, coverage and the conditions its businesses publish. A niche that is not a key comes back with variants and why (a tag, a similar name, a meaning) — nothing is substituted: pick a key. detail: "full" lists every trade in full. TDQS

B3.4/5.0
Behavior3/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint=true and openWorldHint=false, so safety is covered. The description adds genuine behavior beyond that: default 15-mile radius, the no-substitution variant behavior, and what compact vs full returns. However, the bulk of the text is a coverage inventory rather than behavioral disclosure, and the final 'follow the server instructions' sentence is boilerplate that repeats the annotations' implications.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness2/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The core is front-loaded and efficient: purpose, three mode rules, and the variants rule take only a few sentences. But more than half the description is a raw enumeration of every niche and city ('restaurants in Apollo Beach, Carrollwood, ... (+10 more); florists in ...'), which is output data, not invocation guidance, and does not help an agent choose or call the tool.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness3/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With readOnly annotations, no output schema, and 4 optional parameters, the description does explain the return shapes (key list, full trade, variants) and defaults well enough to call it correctly. The coverage dump is superfluous for completeness and arguably misleading to carry as static text, since it will drift from actual data.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the schema already documents niche, detail, location and radius_miles thoroughly. The description restates rather than extends those semantics; its only added nuance is the instruction to pick a returned key instead of relying on substitution, which is behavioral rather than parameter meaning. Baseline 3 is appropriate.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Opening sentence gives a specific verb (lists) and resource (trades/niches this catalogue holds) plus scope (near a place, by key, with business counts inside a default 15-mile radius). It does not distinguish itself from siblings like search_catalog or find_business, so an agent must infer that this is the discovery/listing entry point.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicit mode guidance: 'Without `niche`: a compact list of keys. With `niche`: that trade in full' and '`detail: "full"` lists every trade in full.' It also handles the failure case clearly ('a `niche` that is not a key comes back with `variants` ... pick a key'). Missing is routing versus search_catalog/find_business, so it's clear context without exclusions.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
