Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

No annotations, so the description carries the burden. It discloses the cost ($0.001, cheapest), the payment mechanic (x402), and the return shape (ok + server time + paid flag), which is strong behavioral context. It doesn't specify latency, failure modes, or retry behavior, keeping it out of the top band.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loads the core purpose, then the return, then the usage guidance, then pricing/docs metadata. Slightly dense with the bracketed metadata line, but every element is functional.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a zero-param health-check with no output schema, the description covers purpose, cost, return fields, and usage. It could note auth/rate-limit behavior, but it is complete enough to call correctly.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Zero parameters, so baseline is 4. The description correctly implies no inputs are needed for a ping, and the schema's additionalProperties:false is consistent.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('liveness plus x402 payment pipeline check') and clearly distinguishes itself from all the data-heavy siblings as the cheapest health-check endpoint. The 'Cheapest endpoint' framing and the HTTP path make its identity unambiguous.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly says when to use it: 'verify your x402 client end to end before spending on data endpoints.' This names the precise precondition (before spending) and the goal, giving the agent a clear routing rule versus the expensive data tools.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
