Get Tribunal Decision

get_tribunal_decision
Read-onlyIdempotent

Fetch one tribunal decision by the link returned from search_tribunal_decisions (a GOV.UK path like "/employment-tribunal-decisions/..."). Returns the full extracted decision text where GOV.UK publishes it (most employment, appeal, residential-property and administrative-appeals decisions), the decision categories, the decision date, and a pdf_url to the original judgment PDF. Tax and Chancery Chamber decisions are PDF-only on GOV.UK — text_available is false for those and only pdf_url is returned.

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
linkYesGOV.UK path from a search result, e.g. "/employment-tribunal-decisions/r-ghiotto-v-hawkwell-house-hotel-ltd-6009226-slash-2024".
max_charsNoMaximum characters of decision text to return (default 40000). The response says whether it was truncated.

TDQS

A4.5/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already cover the safety profile (readOnly, idempotent, non-destructive), and the description adds real behavioral context on top: what fields are returned (full text, categories, decision date, pdf_url) and a conditional edge case where Tax and Chancery decisions are PDF-only with text_available=false. That conditional disclosure is exactly the value structured fields cannot carry.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with purpose, followed by return contents and the PDF-only edge case. Three dense sentences, none of which is redundant with the schema or annotations.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description carries the burden of explaining returns and does so thoroughly, plus it flags the PDF-only exception. An agent has everything needed to call it correctly and interpret the response.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so both parameters are already documented in the schema, including the link format and max_chars default. The description reinforces the link's provenance but adds no syntax or format detail beyond the schema, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb (Fetch) and resource (one tribunal decision) and pins the identifier to its source: the `link` returned from search_tribunal_decisions. This cleanly distinguishes it from the sibling search_tribunal_decisions, which an agent can recognize without opening either schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly routes the agent to obtain the `link` from search_tribunal_decisions, implying the search-then-fetch workflow. It does not state exclusions (e.g., when to use list_tribunal_categories instead), so it falls short of a full when/when-not statement.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
