Open or reopen a room

open_room
Idempotent

Open a prepared room, or reopen a closed one so the audience can join, ask and vote again; a room that is already open is returned unchanged. Use it after create_room with open=false, or to resume a session. Returns the room and its links. Fails with room_limit_reached when all of the organization's open rooms are in use, so close one with close_room first. Needs rooms:write.

A4.6/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already cover safety (readOnlyHint=false, destructiveHint=false, idempotentHint=true), so the description is not obliged to restate them. It goes further by disclosing the specific failure mode and its remedy ('room_limit_reached … close one with close_room first') and the required permission scope ('Needs rooms:write'), which the agent cannot derive from annotations alone.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Purpose is front-loaded in the first clause, and each following sentence earns its place by adding scope, prerequisite, and failure handling. The semicolon-chained opening sentence is slightly dense, but nothing is redundant.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a single-parameter mutation tool with an output schema present, the description still supplies everything an agent needs to decide and act: prerequisite state (open=false), permission requirement, failure mode with mitigation, and idempotent-when-already-open behavior. Nothing material is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100% and there is a single parameter, so the schema fully documents 'code' including its pattern and provenance (list_rooms or create_room). The description adds no syntax or format meaning beyond that, making the baseline 3 correct.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Open a prepared room, or reopen a closed one') and names the concrete effect (audience can join, ask and vote again). It also distinguishes itself from siblings by clarifying that an already-open room is returned unchanged, which rules out any confusion with create_room.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly names the triggering scenarios ('after create_room with open=false, or to resume a session') and routes the agent to the correct sibling when capacity is exhausted ('close one with close_room first'). Both when-to-use and the alternate path are spelled out rather than inferred.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
