Read Website File

site_read_file
Read-onlyIdempotent

Reads a text file from the user's hosting website directory. No SFTP/SSH needed. TOKEN-SAVING: for a large file pass offset (1-based start line) and limit (max lines) to read only a slice instead of the whole file — response then includes total_lines so you can page. offset/limit=0 (default) returns the full file (backward-compatible).

TDQS

A3.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnly/idempotent/non-destructive, so the safety profile is covered. The description adds genuinely new behavioral context: no SFTP/SSH required, slice-then-page behavior, and that the response includes total_lines. It does not describe error handling on a missing path.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Purpose is front-loaded in the first sentence, with the token-saving mechanics following. Slightly dense on the offset/limit clause but every sentence earns its place.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists, so return format need not be explained, and the pagination clue (total_lines) is a bonus. The remaining gap is the undocumented site/server/path parameters, which matters given 0% schema coverage.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 0%, so the description carries the full burden. It explains offset (1-based) and limit (max lines) richly, including the 0 default, but leaves path, site, and server completely undocumented — three of five parameters have no meaning anywhere.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Reads a text file from the user's hosting website directory'), which cleanly distinguishes it from a generic fetch. It does not explicitly name the near-sibling site_read_url, but the 'hosting website directory' framing implies the distinction.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Provides clear guidance on when to use the offset/limit slice (large files, token-saving) but gives no direction on alternatives such as site_read_url, site_list_files, or site_fetch. Usage context is implied rather than contrasted.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
