Edit Website File

site_edit_file
Destructive

Makes a SMALL, surgical edit to an existing text file by replacing an exact string — WITHOUT resending the whole file. Use this for iterative tweaks (a heading, a Tailwind class, a price): it saves a large amount of tokens vs site_write_file, which must resend the entire file every time. old_string must match the file EXACTLY and be UNIQUE (include enough surrounding context), unless replace_all=true. For a brand-new file use site_write_file instead.

TDQS

A4.4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare destructiveHint=true and idempotentHint=false, so the mutation risk is covered. The description adds real behavioral constraints beyond that: old_string must match EXACTLY and be UNIQUE unless replace_all=true. It does not, however, state what happens on no-match or multiple-match failure, keeping it below a 5.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Densely front-loaded: the core action and its token advantage come first, then the matching constraint, then the fallback tool. Every sentence carries meaning and none is wasted.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists, so return values need not be explained. The description covers purpose, alternative, and the key matching constraint; only the undefined site/server/path parameters and failure-mode behavior are gaps.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 0% across 6 parameters, so the description must compensate. It explains old_string (exact, unique match) and replace_all (multi-replace) well, but leaves path, site, and server entirely undocumented. Partial compensation justifies a mid score.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Makes a SMALL, surgical edit to an existing text file by replacing an exact string') and explicitly names the sibling it is not (site_write_file). An agent can distinguish it from the write tool without opening either schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives explicit when-to-use ('iterative tweaks: a heading, a Tailwind class, a price') and when-not ('For a brand-new file use site_write_file instead'), plus the practical rationale (token savings). Nothing is left to inference.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
