Render markdown with jotbins

render_markdown
Read-only

Turn markdown (GitHub-flavored, with ```mermaid diagrams, $math$ / $$math$$, > [!NOTE] callouts and :emoji: shortcodes) into a link that renders it as a page on jotbins.com. Returns a ready-made markdown link to show the user. Small documents live entirely in the link; larger ones are uploaded to surl.jotbins.com for a short link that expires after 30 days unused unless keep is true.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
keepNoMake a shortened link permanent instead of expiring after 30 days unused.
titleNoLink text to show instead of the document's first heading.
contentYesThe markdown to render.
shortenNoDefault "auto" shortens long links. "never" keeps the document out of any upload (long link); "always" shortens even small ones.

TDQS

A4.1/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations: it discloses that larger documents are uploaded to the third-party host surl.jotbins.com, that those links expire after 30 days unused unless keep is true, and what the caller gets back (a shareable markdown link). That upload/expiry behavior is exactly the non-obvious trait an agent needs before sending user content.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the action and return value, then the conditional size/expiry rule. The parenthetical dialect list is dense but earns its place by defining accepted markdown. No filler sentences.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With only four params at full schema coverage, a readOnly/openWorld annotation, and no output schema, the description still explains the return shape and the one behavior with real consequences (external upload and expiry). Nothing an agent needs to call it correctly is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds conceptual linkage the schema lacks: it explains that size drives the inline-vs-upload decision and that keep overrides the 30-day expiry, giving the agent a mental model for choosing shorten and keep together.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource: turns GFM markdown (with mermaid, math, callouts, emoji) into a rendering link on jotbins.com, and explicitly names the return value as a ready-made markdown link. It does not name the sibling read_link or draw the boundary against it, but the resource is specific enough that misidentification is unlikely.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The workflow is implied by "Returns a ready-made markdown link to show the user," and the size/expiry sentence hints at when a document goes to an external shortener. However, there is no explicit when-to-use, no exclusion, and no reference to the read_link sibling as an alternative.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
