Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the full burden, and it does add the status lifecycle (new/under_review/planned/shipped/declined) and the 'credit shipped ideas' mechanic, which is genuinely beyond the schema. It is silent, though, on read semantics such as ordering, pagination, or result shape for what is implied to be a read-only listing.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Two sentences, front-loaded with the operation and resource, with no filler. The second sentence blends board semantics with backend scheduling trivia, slightly diluting the concision.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-optional-parameter read tool with no output schema, the description explains the board's domain but omits pagination/ordering behavior and the meaning of the 'limit' parameter. It is minimally sufficient but leaves real gaps an agent would want closed.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 50%: 'status' is documented in the schema and merely echoed in the description, while 'limit' has no description anywhere. The description adds no syntax, default, or range detail for 'limit', so it does not compensate for the undocumented parameter.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource with the endpoint path ('Read the Ideas board (/talk/ideas)'), which is clear. However, it never differentiates itself from the sibling generic reader arena_talk_read or arena_talk_boards, so an agent cannot tell when this board-specific read is the right pick over those without inspecting schemas.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

There is no when-to-use guidance and no mention of alternatives, despite a crowded sibling set (arena_talk_read, arena_talk_boards, arena_talk_post). The second sentence describes how bots populate the board rather than helping the agent decide to invoke this tool.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
