Retry bank matching for a period

well_retry_period_matching

Ask Well to look again for the bank payment behind a fiscal period's invoices that are marked paid with no confirmed bank payment, now. The automatic pass looks again at an invoice only when new bank activity arrives, so do not wait for it. Call it when well_list_period_unmatched_invoices shows unmatched_count above 0 for the period and the user asked to fix the gaps.

It takes the period only. Well picks the invoices on its side, from the period's unmatched invoices (at most 20 per call, in a fixed order); you never pass invoice ids. An invoice whose matching is already queued or running is skipped, so a repeat call while it runs adds nothing; call it once per ask.

The call itself books nothing. It only queues the matching, so it returns before any match lands: never say the gap is fixed. A match the matcher confirms later posts its payment journal like any automatic match, so do not tell the user that nothing will be posted. Say Well is looking again for enqueued_invoice_ids, and name each skipped invoice with its reason (not_found, already_matched, already_queued, dispatch_failed). not_attempted_count is the part of the period's unmatched invoices this call did not send. This call does not retry them, and the automatic pass re-checks them only when new bank activity arrives: do not tell the user they are covered. Read the period again later to see what matched.

Take fiscal_year and fiscal_period from a well_list_period_unmatched_invoices or well_list_periods entry; never derive them from a calendar month yourself.

success: false means nothing was sent. Never report a failed call as a retry in progress.

When the token authorizes one workspace, call this directly — no workspace call is needed first. When it authorizes several, this read will not guess which one you mean: pass workspace_id on the call.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
fiscal_yearYesThe fiscal year of the period.
workspace_idNoTarget workspace. Omit when the token authorizes one workspace. Required when it authorizes several — a write lands in exactly one workspace and this call would not say which.
fiscal_periodYesThe fiscal period, month 1-12.
conversation_idNoThe conversation id returned by the previous Well result, in its meta under well/conversation_id, in its structuredContent, or in its JSON text block. Pass it back on every call in the same conversation, including a call a card makes, so the chosen workspace and the earlier answers still apply. It decides the conversation on its own: nothing the host states about the session replaces it. Omit it only on the first call of a conversation.
idempotency_keyNoOptional client-supplied key. A retried write with the same key returns the original result instead of re-applying the operation.
workspace_scopeNoRestrict this call to the family: the token's primary workspace plus the company workspaces under it that you are a member of. Unrelated authorized workspaces drop out of the read; row reads merge across the family, while a per-workspace figure still reports exactly one workspace.

Output Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
errorNo
skippedYes
successYes
fiscal_yearYes
fiscal_periodYes
conversation_idNoThe conversation this result belongs to. Pass it back as the conversation_id argument on every later Well call in the same conversation.
newly_connectedNoTools that connected to this workspace since the last result and that no session was told about yet, oldest first. Present only when at least one tool is new. The connected-line rule says when to tell an entry; when it does, one line per entry, in the person's language: "<name> is connected.". Never fold several entries into one sentence. Each entry comes back once, on one result only: never repeat its line later.
unmatched_countYes
not_attempted_countYes
conversation_id_noteNoPresent only when the server opened a fresh lane, stating that no choice recorded earlier was read.
enqueued_invoice_idsYes
conversation_id_sourceNoWhere the conversation id came from: the host's own request meta, the caller's argument, or a fresh lane the server opened.

TDQS

A4.8/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With annotations already declaring readOnlyHint=false, destructiveHint=false, idempotentHint=false, the description still adds substantial behavior the annotations cannot convey: the call only enqueues and returns before any match lands, matches later post a payment journal normally, success:false means nothing was sent, and repeated calls during a run are no-ops. It also spells out the skipped-reason taxonomy (not_found, already_matched, already_queued, dispatch_failed).

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The purpose, precondition, and key behavioral warning are front-loaded, and most sentences carry distinct agent-steering content. It is long (~350 words) and returns several times to the same warning ('never say the gap is fixed', 'do not tell the user that nothing will be posted'), which is mild redundancy rather than padding.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a complex, asynchronous write tool with 6 params, an output schema, and heavy agent-facing consequences, the definition covers preconditions, side effects, failure signaling, how to phrase results, what not_attempted_count omits, and how to read the period afterward. Nothing needed to call it correctly or report it honestly is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds real sourcing rules beyond the schema: fiscal_year/fiscal_period must be taken from a well_list_period_unmatched_invoices or well_list_periods entry and never derived from a calendar month, and workspace_id is required only when the token authorizes several workspaces. It also correctly frames invoice ids as never passed by the caller.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific action and scope: ask Well to re-scan a fiscal period's invoices marked paid without a confirmed bank payment, right now. It explicitly distinguishes itself from the automatic pass (which only re-checks on new bank activity) and is clearly separable from siblings like well_list_period_unmatched_invoices.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It names the exact precondition (well_list_period_unmatched_invoices/unmatched_count > 0 plus a user request to fix gaps), the alternative it supersedes (waiting for the automatic pass), and the call cadence ('call it once per ask'; repeats add nothing). Exclusions are explicit rather than implied.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
