add_subtasks

Atomically create one or more subtasks under an existing parent task. All children inherit the parent's project. Returns the created ids. Up to 25 subtasks per call. Use this instead of calling create_task repeatedly when decomposing a claimed task — single transaction, single tool-call budget slot, atomic rollback on any failure.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
parentIdYesThe parent task id. Must be a task the caller can see.
subtasksYes1–25 subtasks to create. Each item mirrors the create_task shape.
idempotencyKeyNoOptional idempotency key. Pass a stable unique value (e.g. a UUID) to make this create safe to retry: calling again with the same key within 24h - even from a new session after a reconnect - replays the original result and creates no duplicate. Org-scoped; works across conversations.

A4.5/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already establish this is a non-read-only, non-destructive write; the description adds genuinely new behavior: atomic all-or-nothing rollback, project inheritance from the parent, the returned ids, and the 25-item cap. It could optionally reconcile why the tool is retry-safe via idempotencyKey while idempotentHint is false, but the disclosure is well above the annotation baseline.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Four short sentences, front-loaded with what it does, then side effects, then the routing advice. Every sentence adds new information with no filler.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With only 3 parameters, no nested output schema, and full schema coverage, the description covers everything an agent needs: parentage, inheritance, limits, return value, and transaction semantics.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3. The description adds one rule not in the schema (children inherit the parent's project) and restates the 25-item cap, which slightly deepens understanding of the array parameter.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Specific verb (create) plus resource (subtasks) plus the constraint that they hang under an existing parent task with inherited project. This cleanly separates it from create_task and bulk_create_tasks, both of which appear in the sibling list.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly routes the agent: 'Use this instead of calling create_task repeatedly when decomposing a claimed task,' and gives the reason (single transaction, single budget slot). It names create_task as the alternative but never addresses bulk_create_tasks, the other obvious sibling for multi-task creation, so the when-not coverage is incomplete.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
