Optimism gas price

op_gas
Read-only

Current gas price on Optimism (eth_gasPrice): gas price, base fee and suggested priority fee in gwei, plus what a plain ETH transfer (21,000 gas) costs right now. Takes no input. Use before sending a transaction or to decide whether to wait; for the fee a past transaction actually paid use op_receipt. Price $0.01/call via x402 USDC or a card key (/credits), first 25 free; failed calls free. Reads or computes only and changes nothing; each call is charged, so repeats are not free.

TDQS

A4.6/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already cover the safety profile, but the description adds non-obvious behavior: it reads/computes only, takes no required input, and — critically — explains that idempotentHint=false means each call is billed ($0.01/call, 25 free, failed calls free), so repeats are not free. That billing semantics is exactly the context an agent needs before retrying.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the core purpose and return values, and every clause is substantive. The closing pricing/retry sentence is a bit dense but earns its place given idempotentHint=false.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

There is no output schema, yet the description enumerates the return fields and the derived transfer cost, plus billing and free-tier rules. Nothing essential for correct invocation is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

With 100% schema coverage the schema already documents the optional `only` projection parameter, so baseline 3 applies. However, the description's blanket "Takes no input" is at odds with a documented optional parameter and could cause an agent to omit `only` for smaller/cheaper answers.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ("Current gas price on Optimism") and enumerates the returned fields: gas price, base fee, suggested priority fee, and the 21,000-gas transfer cost. It also explicitly routes the past-fee case to op_receipt, so an agent can separate it from sibling tools without opening a schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

"Use before sending a transaction or to decide whether to wait" gives an explicit when-to-use, and "for the fee a past transaction actually paid use op_receipt" names an alternative with the condition that selects it. Exclusions are stated, not implied.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
