chat completion

chat_completion
Read-only

Use this when you need an answer from a frontier AI model without an account or an API key: Claude (Opus, Fable, Sonnet, Haiku), GPT-6 or Grok, one call. OpenAI-style messages in, an OpenAI chat.completion out (choices, usage). The price is quoted before the call from your input and max_tokens at the model rate, plus a small margin; a failed call is not charged. Text only, no tools.

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
modelNothe model (default haiku-4-5)
quoteNotrue: return the price of this call without running or paying for it
messagesYesthe conversation, OpenAI style, text only, the last message from the user (50 messages, 24,000 characters at most)
max_tokensNothe most the answer may use, reasoning included (default 1024); the price is computed from it

A4.2/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations only give readOnlyHint/openWorldHint, so the description carries the interesting burden and does so well: price is quoted from input + max_tokens at model rate plus margin, failed calls are not charged, and output is text-only. It omits rate limits, latency, and whether prompts are retained, and does not address the tension that a read-only-flagged tool still spends money.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Four tight sentences, front-loaded with the when-to-use clause, then the I/O contract, then billing behavior, then the capability limit. Every sentence adds information an agent needs before invoking.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description correctly names the return shape (choices, usage), covers the model families, cost mechanics, and text-only limitation, which is enough to call it correctly. Missing only operational context such as rate limits, latency expectations, and prompt data handling.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the schema already explains model, quote, messages and max_tokens; the baseline is 3. The description reinforces the OpenAI message shape and the max_tokens→price linkage but adds no format or default detail the schema lacks.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific action and resource — get one answer from a frontier model (Claude/GPT-6/Grok) without an account or API key — and pins the interface contract (OpenAI-style messages in, chat.completion out). It is clearly distinguishable from siblings like web_search or ask_agent.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

"Use this when you need an answer from a frontier AI model without an account or an API key" gives a clear triggering condition, and "text only, no tools" bounds the use case. It stops short of naming an alternative (e.g. ask_agent) or stating when-not to use it, so 4 rather than 5.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
