Estimate gas, Avalanche

avax_estimate_gas
Read-only

Estimate the gas a transaction would use on Avalanche (eth_estimateGas) and what it would cost at the current gas price, in gas units, gwei and AVAX. Give to, plus value in AVAX and calldata for a contract call, and the sender when the call depends on it. Use before sending a transaction or to price a batch; for the gas price alone use avax_gas. A transaction that would revert is 422 with the reason, uncharged. Example: to=0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD. Price $0.01/call via x402 USDC or a card key (/credits), first 25 free; failed calls free. Reads or computes only and changes nothing; each call is charged, so repeats are not free.

A4.6/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint=true, destructiveHint=false and openWorldHint=true, so the safety profile is covered; the description adds genuinely new context beyond that: $0.01/call via x402 or credits, first 25 free, failed calls free, and revert outcomes as 422 with reason and uncharged. It stops short of describing pagination or latency, but the pricing and failure behavior are exactly the kind of extra detail that helps an agent decide whether to call.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with purpose and return units, then usage, then pricing and failure behavior; every clause is informative. It is dense rather than bloated, though the pricing sentence and the 'reads or computes only' restatement of readOnlyHint could be trimmed slightly.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

There is no output schema, and the description compensates by naming the return units (gas units, gwei, AVAX) and the revert error shape (422 with reason, uncharged). Combined with the example address and billing terms, an agent has everything needed to call and interpret the result.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the schema already documents each field; the description nonetheless adds semantic guidance by clarifying that value is in AVAX, that data is calldata for a contract call, and that from is needed 'when the call depends on it'. That conditional framing is useful routing information not present in the schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Estimate the gas a transaction would use on Avalanche') and explicitly names the underlying RPC method (eth_estimateGas) plus what it returns (gas units, gwei, AVAX). It distinguishes itself from the gas-price sibling by scoping that tool out in the next sentence.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives explicit when-to-use ('before sending a transaction or to price a batch') and a named alternative for the adjacent case ('for the gas price alone use avax_gas'). It also specifies the condition for supplying the from parameter, leaving no routing ambiguity.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
