Hostelworld: Reply to review

hostelworld_reply_to_review

Hostelworld: Public reply under a review. Hostelworld checks it before publishing and it cannot be edited after. Submits an owner's reply to one review. Write it in the language of the review or in English, and leave out the guest's name. Hostelworld checks the reply against its guidelines before it is published, and you cannot edit it after you submit it. By default you confirm each call; you can switch that off for this tool. Reaches other people: confirm with the user before each call. Needs the user's Cotlet API key with access to this app.

A4.2/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Adds substantial behavior beyond the annotations: Hostelworld moderates the reply before publishing, the reply is immutable once submitted, confirmation is on by default but toggleable, a user API key with app access is required, and the action reaches other people. That is exactly the kind of preconditions and side-effects an agent needs for a non-readOnly tool.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness3/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Key facts are front-loaded, but the moderation-and-immutability point is stated twice ('cannot be edited after' appears in back-to-back sentences) and 'Public reply under a review' duplicates 'owner's reply to one review'. Roughly a third of the text is repetition.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-parameter mutation tool with no output schema, the description covers the important ground: preconditions, moderation, immutability, confirmation, and auth. It stops short of describing the result of a successful submission, but nothing critical to correct invocation is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so both parameters are already documented in the schema, including the booking_ref provenance and the body language/name rules. The description restates but does not extend that meaning, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource: 'Submits an owner's reply to one review.' The word 'Public' plus 'one review' cleanly separates it from read-style siblings like hostelworld_query_review and hostelworld_list_reviews, so an agent can distinguish it without opening the schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives real usage context: write in the review's language or English, omit the guest's name, and confirm with the user before each call. It does not, however, explicitly route the agent (e.g. 'use this after reading the review via list_reviews'), so the alternatives are only implied.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
