Google Search Console: Submit sitemap

google-search-console_submit_sitemap

Google Search Console: Tell Google where a sitemap is, or resubmit it. Owner or Full user. Submits a sitemap URL in the Sitemaps report. Submitting only tells Google where the file is; it is fetched right away, but the listed URLs may take time to be crawled and some never are. Redirects are not followed, so give the exact URL. You need Owner or Full user permission. It reaches no one and is undone by removing the sitemap, so it runs without asking first. Needs the user's Cotlet API key with access to this app.

TDQS

A4.2/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations only tell the agent this is a non-read, non-destructive, open-world call. The description adds substantial context beyond that: the file is fetched immediately but listed URLs may take time to crawl and some never are, redirects are not followed, and the action is reversible ('undone by removing the sitemap'). This is exactly the extra behavioral disclosure the lower bar with annotations rewards.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Purpose is front-loaded and the key caveats are included, but the permission requirement is stated twice ('Owner or Full user' and 'You need Owner or Full user permission'), and the fragment 'Owner or Full user.' reads awkwardly. Mostly tight, with one clear redundancy.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-parameter mutation tool with no output schema, the description supplies the safety profile, permissions, timing behavior, and reversibility. Nothing critical is missing, though the duplicate permission statement and lack of explicit routing to sibling tools keep it short of ideal.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds real meaning to sitemap_url by warning that redirects are not followed and the exact URL must be given. The property parameter's format is left entirely to the schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description gives a clear verb+resource ('Tell Google where a sitemap is, or resubmit it' / 'Submits a sitemap URL in the Sitemaps report'), which distinguishes it from read-oriented siblings like list_sitemaps. It never names that sibling explicitly, so full sibling differentiation is left to inference.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It covers the two modes (first submission and resubmission) and states the permission prerequisite (Owner or Full user). It does not explicitly contrast with alternatives such as list_sitemaps or request_indexing, but the operating context is clear.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
