Trim a clip

set_trim

Use this when the person wants to change where a made clip starts or ends, or to cut out any stretch in the middle, in seconds on the clip (get_clip_edit gives the word times). remove [{start_seconds, end_seconds}] cuts stretches (sound, picture and their captions); restore [...] puts cut stretches back. Edges move to the nearest gap between words. A clip keeps at least 3 seconds. Saves the clip only, no render.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
removeNo
clip_idYesThe clip's id (from get_episode, get_job or the Slice link).
restoreNo
end_secondsNo
start_secondsNo

Output Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
clip_idNo
open_in_sliceNoThe clip in the Slice editor, where the person sees the change.

A4.6/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations: it discloses that removal cuts sound, picture and captions together, that restore reverses it, that edges snap to the nearest inter-word gap, that a 3-second minimum is enforced, and that only the clip is saved with no render. The reversibility via restore is exactly the context that makes destructiveHint=false credible.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loads the trigger, then the two array operations, then the constraints. The wording is dense but every clause carries a rule an agent needs (snapping, 3-second floor, no render).

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Return values need not be explained since an output schema exists, and the mutation's safety profile is covered by annotations plus the restore explanation. The remaining gap is that the top-level start/end knobs are unexplained relative to remove/restore, leaving ambiguity about how to set the clip's boundaries.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

With schema coverage at only 20%, the description carries the load and explains the remove/restore array shapes, their units (seconds), and their side effects on captions. The top-level start_seconds/end_seconds parameters are only implied by "change where a made clip starts or ends" and are never named or bounded explicitly.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States the specific operation (changing a made clip's start/end, or cutting a middle stretch) on a specific resource (the clip), in seconds. It also distinguishes itself from get_clip_edit by naming that sibling as the source of word times rather than a trimmer.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

"Use this when the person wants to change where a made clip starts or ends, or to cut out any stretch in the middle" gives a clear triggering condition, and the get_clip_edit parenthetical points at the prerequisite lookup. It stops short of explicit when-not guidance or naming edit_captions/undo_edit as alternatives.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
