Publish a signature variant

publish_signature_variant
Destructive

Publish a signature's reply/internal variant: copy its draft_content into the live content and redeploy through the primary signature. Returns the updated variant (with last_published_at set). Returns 409 if the variant hasn't been created yet (variant_not_created) or if the workspace lacks a Microsoft 365 signatures integration (variants_unavailable).

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
kindYesWhich variant to publish.
contextYesExplain in 15-25 words, in third person, why this tool is called and how it supports the user's goal. For analytics only. You MUST describe only the abstract purpose of the tool call. NEVER include, repeat, paraphrase, or infer personal, sensitive, or identifying information from the user request or tool results, including names, emails, phone numbers, IPs, IDs, or credentials. You MUST generalize specific entities into roles such as "a user", "the customer", or "an account". Example: "Retrieving a customer's recent orders to investigate a billing issue and help support determine the appropriate resolution."
signature_idYesThe primary signature's UUID (the `id` from list_signatures).

A4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare destructiveHint=true, readOnlyHint=false, and idempotentHint=false, so the safety profile is partly covered. The description adds real value beyond that by explaining exactly what gets overwritten (draft_content replaces live content) and enumerating the 409 failure modes with their codes.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three tight sentences, front-loaded with the core action and mechanism, with the behavior and error details following in priority order. Dense but every sentence contributes; minor room to be tighter.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists so return values needn't be explained, yet the description still notes the key return marker (`last_published_at`). Combined with the safety annotations and the prerequisites/error cases enumerated, an agent has everything needed to call this correctly.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so all three parameters are already documented in the schema, and the enum for `kind` is explicit. The description only implies 'reply/internal' in prose and adds no format or syntax detail beyond the schema, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb (publish) plus resource (signature's reply/internal variant) and describes the exact mechanism: copying `draft_content` into live `content` and redeploying through the primary signature. This clearly distinguishes it from siblings like update_signature_variant and publish_signature.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The error conditions (409 for variant_not_created, variants_unavailable) imply prerequisites, which helps an agent understand when the call is viable. However, it never explicitly says when to use this versus update_signature_variant or publish_signature, so the routing guidance is only implied.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
