Update assignment

update_assignment
Idempotent

Update an existing assignment (task, user, or role). Only the fields you pass are changed; the rest are preserved (the API PUT is a full replace, so this tool reads the current assignment first and merges). Requires Administrator or ProjectManager role. Pass an empty string to clear the role. The task and user must belong to the active workspace. Returns the updated assignment.

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Adds substantial context beyond the annotations: explains that the underlying API PUT is a full replace and this tool internally reads-then-merges, which is exactly the kind of side-effect an agent cannot infer from idempotentHint/destructiveHint alone. Also discloses the role requirement, the empty-string clear sentinel, the workspace membership constraint, and the return value.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Five short sentences, each carrying distinct information (scope, merge behavior, auth, clear convention, cross-field constraint, return value). Front-loaded with the purpose and zero filler.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

No output schema, but the description states it returns the updated assignment. Mutation semantics, permission requirements, partial-update behavior, and cross-field validation are all covered, so an agent has everything needed to invoke it correctly.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3; the description still adds meaning by explaining the merge semantics of omitting a field, restating the empty-string-to-clear convention for role, and imposing the cross-field constraint that taskId/userId must resolve within the active workspace.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource (update an existing assignment) and enumerates the mutable fields (task, user, role). An agent can immediately distinguish this from create_assignment, delete_assignment, and update_task without opening any schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explains the partial-update contract explicitly ('only the fields you pass are changed; the rest are preserved') and gives preconditions (Administrator/ProjectManager role, task and user must belong to the active workspace). It does not explicitly name an alternative tool for full-replace or create semantics, so it falls short of a 5.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
