update_settings

Update Settings

Change the user's profile, targeting and limits. Persists immediately, sends nothing.

Every field is optional and only the ones passed are changed; each field's own description says what it does. Pipelines read these settings, so this is how "only comment on AI posts" or "cap me at 5 a day" gets applied.

This is also how you clear a blocked pipeline. When a run fails for a missing setting, the error names the field: ask the user for it in plain language, send it here, then retry the run. Never invent a value the user did not give you.

TDQS

A4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the behavioral burden well: it says changes persist immediately, sends nothing, only passed fields are changed, and pipelines read these settings. It also warns not to invent values and explains the missing-setting recovery flow. It does not cover permissions, reversibility, or response shape in depth, so it is strong but not exhaustive.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is front-loaded with the core action and then adds useful behavioral and workflow context. It is generally efficient for a 23-parameter tool, though the trailing response boilerplate and repeated settings framing add minor noise.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given the tool's complexity, 23 parameters, full schema coverage, no annotations, and no output schema, the description is largely complete. It explains partial updates, persistence, pipeline impact, and blocked-run recovery, but does not mention how to inspect current settings or what the successful response contains.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the schema already documents each field's meaning. The description adds useful parameter-level semantics by stating that every field is optional and only passed fields are changed, which clarifies partial-update behavior beyond the schema. It appropriately defers individual field meaning to the schema descriptions.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: changing the user's profile, targeting, and limits via update_settings. It is clear about what the tool changes, but it does not explicitly distinguish itself from sibling tools such as get_user_profile or the pipeline runners, so it falls short of a perfect sibling-aware score.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives clear usage context: use this to change profile, targeting, and limits, and specifically to unblock a pipeline when a run fails due to a missing setting. It does not state when not to use the tool or name alternative tools, so it is strong but not fully explicit about alternatives.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
