Get illustration PNG link

get_illustration_png_url
Read-only

Get a PNG URL for an illustration - use when SVG is not available to you. NOTE: SVG is preferred where you can get it (use get_illustration_svg).

Sizes: "low" (a small preview), "standard" (a mid-size raster), "hd" (the largest). "low" and "standard" work for everyone; "hd" needs a signed-in account whose plan covers illustrations and MCP access, the same as SVG, unless the illustration has free_distribution: true. The exact pixel dimensions depend on the illustration - read width/height from the response rather than assuming a fixed size.

The URL is presigned and expires in one hour. For a link to keep, use the permanent preview.url in a search result.

Args: illustration_id: The id from a search_illustrations result (field illustrations[].id) ctx: MCP context for API access size: "low", "standard" (default) or "hd"

Returns: {"url", "width", "height", "expires_in_seconds"}, or {"error"}. "hd" counts toward the paid-download limit: a refusal carries "retry_after_seconds".

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
sizeNostandard
illustration_idYesIllustration id from the results of search_illustrations (field illustrations[].id)

Output Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
urlNoPresigned download link. Valid for expires_in_seconds. Absent when error is set.
errorNoSet only on failure.
widthNoPixel width of the file.
heightNoPixel height of the file.
expires_in_secondsNoSeconds the url stays valid. One hour.
retry_after_secondsNoSeconds until the download limit resets. Set only when the limit refused the call.

A4.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Beyond the readOnlyHint/openWorldHint annotations it discloses the presigned one-hour expiry, the account/plan requirement for 'hd', the free_distribution exception, that 'hd' counts toward the paid-download limit, and that a refusal returns retry_after_seconds. That is strong behavioral context; only minor gaps remain, such as rate-limit behavior beyond the hd counter.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with purpose and the preferred alternative, then clearly sectioned into Sizes/Args/Returns. It is somewhat long, and the Returns block partly restates what the existing output schema already provides, so a little trimming is possible without losing information.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-parameter read tool with annotations and an output schema, the definition covers everything an agent needs: which alternative to prefer, size semantics and entitlement rules, URL lifetime, and the shape of the error case. Nothing material is left to inference.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters5/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is only 50% (size has no schema description beyond a default), and the description fully compensates by defining each enum value's meaning, confirming 'standard' as the default, and stating the access conditions attached to 'hd'. It also clarifies that illustration_id comes from search_illustrations results.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The opening sentence states a specific verb and resource ('Get a PNG URL for an illustration') and immediately frames the scope ('use when SVG is not available to you'), which cleanly separates it from the sibling get_illustration_svg and get_illustration_animation.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives an explicit when-to-use rule (only when SVG is unavailable), names the preferred alternative by name (get_illustration_svg), and additionally points at the permanent preview.url path when a durable link is needed - covering the main edge cases an agent would otherwise guess at.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
